Seit ihrer Gründung vor neun Jahren hat sich die JBBG - jazz bigband graz unter künstlerischer Leitung von Saxofonist Heinrich von Kalnein und Trompeter Horst-Michael Schaffer beinahe aus dem Stand in die Oberliga der europäischen großen Orchester gespielt. Das Ensemble ist gespickt mit renommierten Namen der europäischen Jazzszene und hochgeschätzten Solisten aus Österreich, Deutschland, der Schweiz, Slovenien und den USA.
Mit ihren letzten Programmen begeisterten sie erfolgreich in einigen der besten europäischen Jazzclubs ebenso wie 2006 auf der prestigeträchtigen IAJE-Conference in New York, dem North Sea Festival wie auch dem deutschen Rheingau Festival (z.b. zusammen mit der mehrfach Grammy geehrten A Capella Formation Take 6).
Mit ihrer neuesten Produktion ‚ELECTRIC POETRY & Lo-Fi Cookies’ geht die Band nun einen großen Schritt weiter: Komponiert von Horst-Michael Schaffer und produziert von beiden Bandleadern verbindet ‚ELECTRIC POETRY & LO-FI COOKIES’ die Coolness elektronischer Clubsounds und Grooves mit der Power und Sophistication der 17-köpfigen jbbg - mit weiten melodischen Bögen, berührenden, hochvirtuosen Soli und Ausflügen in Tango Nuevo und afrikanische Musik. Als besonderen Gast lud die Band die Berliner Theremin Künstlerin Barbara Buchholz ein, die mit ihrem einzigartigen Instrument aus der Frühzeit der elektronischen Musik einige überzeugende Beiträge beisteuerte. Eine besondere Entdeckung ist zudem Bandleader Horst-Michael Schaffer als sensibler und ausdrucksstarker Vokalist.
Aufgenommen in den renommierten deutschen Bauerstudios und gemischt vom Wiener Soundguru Dietz setzt das europäisch besetzte Spitzenensemble mit ihrer siebten Produktion einen weiteren Meilenstein im zeitgenössischen orchestralen Jazz. European Bigband Jazz on the edge of tomorrow!
In its nineth year of existence the JBBG - jazz bigband graz under leadership of German saxophonist Heinrich von Kalnein and Austrian trumpeter Horst-Michael Schaffer is definitely a strong and unique voice on the European jazzorchester's map. The members of the band comprise of some of Austrians best musicians as well as some of the most prolific soloists from Germany, Switzerland, Slovenia and the U.S. Their last programs tore up the houses in Europe's best Jazzclubs as well as at the 2006 IAJE Convention in New York and at the North Sea Festival as well as the German Rheingau festival (together with the Grammy-winning a-cappella group Take 6).
With their newest album 'Electric Poetry & Lo-Fi Cookies' the band makes a huge leap forward. Composed by Horst-Michael Schaffer and produced by both of the bandleaders 'Electric Poetry & Lo-Fi Cookies' combines the cool electronic sounds of today’s clubscene with the power and sophistication of the 17–piece jbbg. High-virtuoso and energetic solos are framed by strong melodies and counterpoint, which lead to musical excursions to Minimal Music as well as to Argentina and Africa. As a special guest they invited Berlin-based Theremin artist Barbara Buchholz providing a few very special sounds with her ancient electronic instrument. On top of this leader Horst-Michael Schaffer himself surprises as a superb and convincing vocalist.
Recorded at the renowned German Bauerstudios and mixed by Viennese sound guru Dietz with this production the European top-notch ensemble sets another milestone in jazz. European Bigband Jazz on the edge of tomorrow!
Next to their musical search on the edge of tomorrow the jazz bigband graz did and does perform with some of the best jazzsingers on the planet: Kurt Elling, The New York Voices, John Hendricks, Diane Schuur and the vocal group Take 6 were featured soloists among others.
