Member Since7/14/2006
Band MembersThe line-up is Roger Eames (string bass), Christine Eames (keyboards), Gil Monks (saxes), Rob Wiffen (trombone) and Mike Brain (drums, vocals). Earlier this year they brought over top trombonist Bob Wilson as a special guest soloist for the "Alkazartes" jazz festival in Los Alcázares, adding clarinettist Paul Bridgewater and trumpeter John Atkins to the front-line.

Drummer Mike Brain is also the band's main vocalist, singing in a style somewhere between Chet Baker and Mark Murphy. On jazz and dance gigs he has a huge repertoire drawn not only from jazz but also bossas and pop tunes. Rob Wiffen plays the best jazz trombone on the Costas and in addition sings jazz standards. Bassist Geof Hull is the first dep for Roger on string bass, and we will feature him on tuba on some future concerts. GUESTS: we hope once again to bring over from the UK trombonist Bob Wilson, also jazz pianist Tim Best who filled in for Christine on last Christmas gigs.

Jazz Greats

Jazz Greats is a small band with a big reputation, playing the greatest hits in Jazz from Louis Armstrong to Miles Davis.

The line-up is Roger Eames (string bass), Christine Eames (keyboards), Gil Monks (saxes), Rob Wiffen (trombone) and Mike Brain (drums, vocals). Earlier this year they brought over top trombonist Bob Wilson as a special guest soloist for the "Alkazartes" jazz festival in Los Alcázares, adding clarinettist Paul Bridgewater and trumpeter John Atkins to the front-line.

Christine won prizes as a big band arranger in the UK, so many of the Jazz Greats greatest hits are arranged and composed by her, while husband Roger worked for the BBC for many years as producer of Humphrey Littelton's Jazz Club programme.

Their main regular venue is the "El Pescadito" restaurant in Mil Palmeras (Mondays) but they also play Wednesday and Saturday nights at the "El Balcon" restaurant in Campoamor. Other one-off dates include the La Laguna Hotel for weddings and Ruby wedding anniversaries and a special 'live' jazz nights at the Silk Notes restaurant in Montesinos on November 7th and another hopefully in December. If you haven't been there before, check out the jazz atmosphere with giant posters of Satchmo and Trane decorating the walls! And watch this space for news of another new local weekly jazz club starting in the new year, promoted by Jazz Greats and friends, followed by a St Valentine's jazz dance at El Pescadito in February.

Members of the band also provide backing for Christine's choir - "Coro Pilar", which performs sacred and secular music in concert in the Pilar de la Horadada area - Christmas music, Songs from the Shows etc.

For more details of any of the above, or if you'd like to offer a gig or concert to Jazz Greats, please phone Christine and Roger on 96676 2308
