First, it was planned as an open project - based on the fascination and challenge of breaking with the usual stiff rules, going beyond narrow boundaries and exploring new musical side roads. By now, Jazzkantine stands an an unsurpassed example of the musical fusion of Jazz, Rap, Funk and Soul, and with precisely this kind of merging and its respective wealth of variantion, they have occupied a musical niche that was undiscovered so far. The development and establishment of this mixture has fallen onto extremely fertile ground. In a time, when Rap serves as the medium, through eloquent wordplay, creative syntax an expressive intonation, it is possible for German-speaking music to co-exist with English-speaking music in the HipHop charts. Furthermore, the extensive and wide-ranging styles and nuances of Jazz offer numerous possibilities, so that this large-scale „canteen“ project never lacks ideas, neither in ist ingredients nor its preparation.
The makeup of the „canteen crew“ itself, consisting of twelve permanent members and wellknown changing guest stars from the most diverse musical backgrounds, offers an incredible potential for inspiring energy. And this, besides the joy of experimentation as well as the enthusiasm of all those involved, is the secret as well as the recipe for success of Jazzkantine.
The response to the albums Jazzkantine (1994), heiß & fettig (1995), frisch gepreßt & live (1996), Geheimrezept (1997), In Formation (2000), Futter für die Seele (2002), unbegrenzt haltbar (2004) and 10 Jahre Live (2005) is ample proof for the overwhelming impression that this project has made: The „Bundesverband der Phonographischen Wirtschaft“ has given the group two „Jazz Awards“, in 1996 Jazzkantine received the 1996 „Echo Award“ („German Grammy“) for the best jazz production of the year, an the readers of the magazine „Audio“ voted them the „Golden Ear Award“. All of their albums remained in the German and Swiss Media Control charts, the Black Music charts as well as in the Jazz Top 30 for month.

A look behind the curtain...
The magic potion is stirred up and can be tasted... but as far as organizational matters are concerned, they developed out of pure creative chaos. More than a year of pre- production time was needed for the next new album, which besides being a lot of fun, due to the inspiring togetherness and thrilling contacts, also had some pretty stressing consequences. In the midest of overflowing ashtrays, mountain-high piles of all the possible energizers, uncountable aspirin tablets, masses of tapes, cell phones and pizza delivery service leftovers, the local Good Samaritans took care of the necessay regeneration devices with a first aid station right in the studio. Video games, brain machines, painted football fields, installed basketball baskets and engaged cheer leaders helped to revitalize and uplift the spirits of those involved in the project, who had reached the limits of their physical capacity. The initiators and secret agents of this project were more than content: Christian Eitner, Matthias Lanzer and Ole Sander. And the guest musicians can look forward to excellent laurels to travel on for their next project: thanks to the engagement of the secret agents there are no more obstacles for an enlargement of the runway at the Braunschweig airport. It was in „recovery country“ that the agents spent their well-earned holiday after finishing the project -- a secret recipe for retanking the necessary energy!
Prospects: The Jazzkantine -- LIVE
Of course, the „canteen service“ ist also offered by Jazzkantine - LIVE. In more than 750 live performances (1998 in Montreux, Leverkusen „Jazzdays“, Litauen....) at various concerts, sessions and festivals in Germany, Austria and Switzerland the Jazzers and rappers as well as DJ Air-Knee have heated up their audiences. The stage has proven to be the perfect place for the group to „cook“ -- for the interplay of all the different musical trends and influences. Because of the interactive quality of their live performances, the crew of Jazzkantine is one of the most sought-after live bands in Germany. Chief cook, producer, composer and bass player Christian Eitner took the role of coach for the 10-member permanent crew, who are sometimes joined by replacement musicians depending on needs.
At the center of the stage stands the passionate wind trio, namely George Bishop (alto sax), York (tenor sax) and Nils Wogram (trombone), responsible for the groove are Tom Bennecke (guitar) and Christian Eitner (bass). The stew is stirred up by the funk brothers Dirk Erchinger (drums) and gold finger Jan-Heie Erchinger (keyboards). Interactive gigs and free-style interludes are presented by the rappers at the front: Shooting Star Cappuccino (Solo - Gold Rapper in Germany) and word acrobat Tachiles. And the man between the rappers and jazzers is hyperactive, too, in the best of all free back styles: hardly any record survives the scratch skills of Air-Knee..s special DJ-Show. So beware in the first row! The musical catering service of the „canteen“ has an incredible appetizing effect. Whether young or old, whether Jazz or Funk and Soul gourmets, hungry HipHop or Rap eaters or weight watchers ... nobody will leave these concerts with an empty stomach. It is one hundred percent pure -- stirred, not shaken!
