  • Bio

From the onset of his career, J. Blackfoot has kept himself and his music rooted in real-life experiences. Blackfoot’s career began the way all young Artist wish for: “I was hangin’ out with some friends on McLemore Venue, where STAX RECORDS was located. We were singin’ some harmony, like the old “Do-Wop” songs. David Porter, (producer at STAX RECORDS) walked by. A friend knew David and said to him, “You gotta hear this cat Blackfoot sing”. So we went across the street to a place where there was a jukebox. I played Wilson Picket’s “I’m In Love”, and Otis Redding’s “Shout Bam-A-Lama”, and sang along with the records and David liked it. I got an audition at STAX RECORDS and things took off from there.” From his time as lead-vocalist on six albums and fifteen singles with “The Soul Children”, with the hits, “The Sweeter He Is”, “Move Over”, “I’ll Understand”, and “Hearsay”, Blackfoot learned that, “You’ve got to feel what you sing”! Unfortunately, at the height of their prominence, STAX RECORDS experienced its untimely end, sending Blackfoot and “The Soul Children” on hiatus. Nonetheless, Blackfoot, knowing how to survive the hard times, reemerged with a new and distinctive presence. From his overwhelmingly successful debut solo album, “City Slicker”, with it’s chart topping single, “TAXI”, (for which he received the 1984 Soul Train “New Artist of the Year Award”), to his “Physical Attraction” and “U-Turn” LPs, Blackfoot has established himself as a consistent solo performer. Between tours in Japan and Italy, Blackfoot completed his “Love-Aholic” CD that has to its credit the successful single “Just One Lifetime”, a duet featuring the debut of the vocal artistry of Ann Hines. With the subsequent release of his “Room Service” and “Reality” albums, J. Blackfoot again proved that he had the ability to hold his own. Once again, Blackfoot has served up his captivating and charismatic vocal style on his releases “Having An Affair” and “Same Time Same Place” on Basix Music Records produced by Larry Dodson, lead-singer of the legendary “Barkays”. Teaming up with two of his former STAX RECORDS label-mates: the “Barkays”, Larry Dodson and James Alexander, as producers, J. Blackfoot is currently taking radio by storm with his latest cd, “It Aint Over Till It’s Over which was released on JEA/RightNow Records April 18, 2006. This CD also features a breath-taking duet with Lenny Williams entitled, “I’m Just A Fool For You” and a part 2 of the same song which features a power packed performance from the prince of southern soul Sir Charles Jones which rose all the way to 1 in many markets in over 50 cities, just more proof that J. Blackfoot remains “The Voice and Soul of R&B”.
