Important Facts About STDs

* STDs are spread during close, intimate activity, including oral, anal or vaginal intercourse.

* STD germs can infect the mouth, rectum, and sex organs vagina, vulva, penis and testes).

* STDs are very serious and can be painful. They can cause damage to sexual and reproductive organs, and injure your baby during childbirth if not treated.

* You can be infected with an STD, including HIV, and have no signs or symptoms.

* If you have been tested for one STD, do not assume you have been tested for all STDs.

* If you have been treated for one STD, do not assume you have been treated for all STDs. Each STD requires a specific medication or treatment.

* Do not share medications with a partner or friend. This can be dangerous for both of you.

* A pap smear is not a test for STDs.

* An infection of any kind can be a serious health care issue, no matter how you get it. Don’t ignore a sexually transmitted infection.

Prevention

The best way to avoid getting a sexually transmitted disease is by not having sex.

If you do have sex, using a condom every time you have sex will help protect you from STDs. Free condoms are available at JCHD. Brochures about condoms are also available, along with suggestions on how to talk with your partner about using them.

Limit your number of sexual partners, and talk to them about their sexual and drug use history. Ask them to get tested.

About me:
Jackson County Health Department

JCHD provides sexual health services to teens and young adults by appointment. Our services, which include counseling, testing, treatment, and partner notification, are confidential, meaning that we can not discuss your records with anyone unless we have your permission. Although parental consent is not required, we encourage you to confide in your family if you have a health problem.

Testing

We can test you for these sexually transmitted diseases:
• Gonorrhea
• Chlamydia
• Syphilis
• HIV
• Herpes
• Hepatitis C (for anyone with a
history of injection drug use)

Treatment

If you have gonorrhea, Chlamydia, or syphilis, we can give you medicines to cure these infections. Your sexual partner(s) should also be treated because it is likely that they are infected as well and may have no symptoms. If you have sex with them after you are treated, and your partner(s) did not get treated also, you are likely to get the infection back again.

For the first outbreak of herpes, we can provide you with antiviral medication to reduce the severity and length of your symptoms.

We also provide immunizations against hepatitis A and hepatitis B.

Some STDs, like HIV, can be treated to help reduce symptoms, but cannot be cured.

Partner Notification

If you have an STD and are uncomfortable or unable to tell your partner that he or she needs testing and treatment, JCHD can do this for you. Your name or information that may identify you is never shared during this process.

The doctor told me I have chlamydia. I told my boyfriend, but he says he doesn't have anything because he doesn't have any symptoms. Where did I get it from?

You said: Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted disease, so you got it from having sex with your current or a previous partner. Both males and females often don't have symptoms. He needs to get tested and treated. Otherwise, it is likely that you will get the disease back again. The best way to prevent it is to use condoms consistently, or not have sex at all.
