   Author J.C. McGowan's Blurbs
About me:
I am the author of the novel The Big God Network (see description below).

I also write about Brazilian music (as Chris McGowan) and co-authored the book The Brazilian Sound: Samba, Bossa Nova and the Popular Music of Brazil, which has been translated into French, German and Japanese versions. A revised U.S. edition is now available. You can find reviews and ordering information here: The Brazilian Sound.

And I blog for the Huffington Post about culture, politics, environmental issues, and Brazil (my second country): Chris McGowan at the HuffPost

In the past, I penned articles about culture, the arts, and ecology for the Los Angeles Times, Los Angeles magazine, Musician, and other publications. I was a longtime columnist for Billboard, and during that time, I wrote "Entertainment in the Cyber Zone: Exploring the Interactive Universe of Multimedia" (Random House).

Here is the book description for my novel The Big God Network:

"J.C. McGowan's science-fiction debut The Big God Network blends the wry humor of Kurt Vonnegut with the cosmic scope of Carl Sagan and the edgy near-future scenarios of William Gibson. The novel explores the clash of culture and religion in cyberspace and post-America; the search for extraterrestrial intelligence and higher powers; and the socio-cultural impact of "virtual life" on our existence, as it takes us on a wild ride through Bali, Tokyo, California, and exotic virtual worlds that range from the fantasy realm of Nigh Errant to the erotic Yabyum Palace to the evangelical Church of the Good Citizen."

The novel is available here:
The Big God Network (at Amazon.com)
The Big God Network (Amazon U.K.)
The Big God Network (Amazon Canada)

Hail, J.C. (Chris) McGowan!

By popular request, a reprise of a RE-VO homage...

THE GAIAN SAGE
by RE-VO
He's called J.C.
Some call him Chris.
His work is dark,
yet filled with bliss.
Quite soon, he'll sit
with Kurt and Ray
(while still alive,
I hope to say).
I write like Geisel
here to show
that J.C. is a
guy who knows that
thoughts must be accessible
and deeply comprehensible.
His words are deep
although they're clear.
He wants to help us
with our fears.
There's work to do,
so let's engage
the method of
the Gaian sage.
With thanks, J.C.,
I write this poem.
Click, my friends,
and get to know him.

Wishing you and yours a great Thanksgiving, my space-bro.

Peace, love, and space-brotherhood,
RE-VO

SATURN AFTER EQUINOX
The other side of Saturn's ring plane is now directly illuminated by the Sun. For the previous 15 years, the southern side of Saturn and its rings were directly illuminated, but since Saturn's equinox in August, the orientation has reversed. Pictured above last month, the robotic Cassini spacecraft orbiting Saturn has captured the giant planet and its majestic rings soon after equinox. Imaged from nearly behind, Saturn and its moon Tethys each show a crescent phase to Cassini that is not visible from Earth. As the rings continue to point nearly toward the Sun, only a thin shadow of Saturn's rings is visible across the center of the planet. Close inspection of Saturn's rings, however, shows superposed bright features identified as spokes that are thought to be groups of very small electrically charged ice particles. Understanding the nature and dynamics of spokes is not fully understood and remains a topic of research.

I Wish you a Fabulous End of the Week My Dearly Friend.
Thought & kisses from France :)

Hail, J.C. (Chris) McGowan...

Houston: [static... radio noise] Ahhh... copy that, RE-VO!
RE-VO: I am [unintelligible] and approaching Rio.
Houston: Copy that, RE-VO.
[music cue: Richard Strauss' "Also Sprach Zarathustra," opus 30]
RE-VO: Corcovado base, here... the RE-VO has landed.
Houston: [cheers in the Mission control room] Yeahhhh!
RE-VO: It'll be one small step for [a] band.... one giant leap for band-kind.
Houston: [more cheers in the Mission control room] Yeahhhh!
RE-VO: We are parked [unintelligible] and we're next to a gigantic statue of a bearded dude... he looks Anunnaki to me, Houston... a bit like En-ki.
Houston: Sounds like a Big God, there, RE-VO... Rio is the home of the amazing sci-fi author J.C. McGowan, creator of "The Big God Network." Coincidence? I think not.
RE-VO: Hmmm... pretty impressive... that's one heck of a promotional gimmick. I'm gonna make sure to get the name of J.C.'s publicist while I'm here.

I hope that you and yours are well (or almost well), revered sci-fi guru and space-bro. It's true... "XII" is in flight and on its way, much like the UFO (the Italians say "ooo-fo") behind you in your super-cool avatar picture.

Just passing by to wish you a weekend of extraterrestrial bliss and cosmic awareness.
As the stars will have it!
Peace, love, and space-brotherhood,
RE-VO

5th NOVEMBER's FULL MOON
Illuminating the landscape all through the night of November 2nd, this week's bright Full Moon was known in the northern hemisphere as a Hunter's Moon. But this dramatic view of the shining lunar orb, from Sobreda, Portugal, was captured just a few nights earlier, on Halloween. In the spirit of the season, the image plays a little trick. The picture is actually two digital photos - one short and one long exposure. They were combined to bring out the details of the bright lunar surface and the fainter features in the dark, surrounding clouds, in a single image. Of course, you may recognize some of the spookier shapes in the clouds as having visited your neighborhood last week, along with Halloween's Moon.

HI My Dearly JC !
Enjoy the Full Moon and I Wish you a BEAUTIFUL day
With much Love & Blessing from The UNIVERSE.

ZODIAKAL LIGHT OVER LAGUNA VERDE
An unusual triangle of light is visible this time of year just before dawn, in the northern hemisphere. Once considered a false dawn, this triangle of light is actually Zodiacal Light, light reflected from interplanetary dust particles. The bright reflecting triangle is clearly visible on the right of the above image taken from Laguna Verde near Valparaíso, Chile in late July. The band of our Milky Way Galaxy on the left mirrors the zodiacal band. Zodiacal dust orbits the Sun predominantly in the same plane as the planets: the ecliptic. Zodiacal light is so bright in the north this time of year because the dust band is oriented nearly vertical at sunrise, so that the thick air near the horizon does not block out relatively bright reflecting dust. Zodiacal light is also bright for people in Earth's northern hemisphere in March and April just after sunset. In the southern hemisphere, zodiacal light is most notable after sunset in late summer, and brightest before sunrise in late spring.

From accross the Universe, Wishing you a Pleasant and Peaceful Week my Dearly Friend.
Much Blessing & Love.

Hail, J.C. McGowan (Chris)...

Greetings, dear space-bro and revered sci-fi guru. I hope that you and yours are all well.
Just finishing the new edition of "The Brazilian Sound"... brilliant and inspiring, as is all your work. Your writing is so skillful, vibrant, and friendly, no matter in which style you are writing. I am very proud to be your space-brother, man.
I'm picking up the first shipment of "XII" from Toronto's Can Clone, tomorrow at 12:00 (a time suggested, without methodical irony, by Candy at Can Clone)... a good sign, I believe. I will send one to you this week.
Just flying by to wish you a great Halloween!
As the stars will have it.
Peace, love, and space-brotherhood,

Hail, J.C. McGowan!

Greetings, revered sci-fi guru and dear space bro.

Gee... I wish that I had received your important email BEFORE we had hired this guy to sing on our song, "The Sage":

That would have been REALLY good advice, had it been more timely.

We really are just a few days away (I know... I am beginning to sound like Axl Rose, regarding his "Chinese Democracy," but it really is true) from taking our RE-VO-mastered disk over to our friends at Can Clone. We're just putting finishing touches on the artwork. Please send me (dreamland11@myspace.com) a physical mailing address, Chris, as I really want to send you one (gratis) when it is done.

Wishing you and yours a fabulous weekend of this....

"The gilding of the Indian summer mellowed the pastures far and wide.
The russet woods stood ripe to be stripped, but were yet full of leaf.
The purple of heath-bloom, faded but not withered, tinged the hills...
Fieldhead gardens bore the seal of gentle decay; ... its time of
flowers and even of fruit was over."
