Sounds LikeNothing You've Ever Heard! We’ve had criticism from all directions with what we do musically. Traditional jazz musicians don’t like that we don’t have any structure(no bridges, no verse structure ect.) Also the use of electronic percussion and midi on the guitars. Rockers don’t like us for the same structural reasons, plus no vocals, and too many odd time signatures. Pop musicians, well I don’t pay any attention to them, so it doesn’t matter what they complain about. The point of this music is absolute improv from the beginning to the end. From the first note or beat we make it all up collectively in the here and now. Either Frank yells out the key we are in, or whoever plays the first note, well that’s the key. Same with the time signatures, we just start playing, no count off, or discussion before hand. Sometimes we will play for a solid hour. Let the music and time signatures shift and evolve. Later on I’ll just cut the songs into segments, and make anywhere from 2 to 5 songs out of what we’ve done. On a couple CD’s we put the entire piece on a CD, but I found most people don’t want 60 to 80 minute songs. On some pieces we(the drummers) just jam with Frank for 5 to 10 minutes, then Frank will overdub other instruments over it. Then do another jam. What we don’t do is stop, and start over. No second takes at anytime or anything. We keep it as immediate as possible. It only takes 6 hours of recording time, 12 hours of mixing time, and we have a double CD. Also we have never had a rehearsal and on almost every session we have players that have never played together. On some CD’s we players who never knew each other. We push the limits at all times which has brought out the best in many of the players. Some didn’t like the challenge, but most loved it! It’s been hard on bass players since we might be playing in two or more time signatures at the same time. I might play in 7/4 and Rickie in 5/4 with Jayson floating in non time. When we have guest percussionists, we play around with what they are doing. Keep in mind that all this percussion is interacting with melodic instruments, absolute creative improv. That’s what we do and we do it well. All of us have played in bands whether from bop to rock to latin, so we can do that, but that’s not why I put this together. Absolute freedom, but absolute attention to what others are doing. So if people don’t like it that’s ok, but if anyone thinks we don’t know what we’re doing, well bring it on. We will play with anyone at anytime in any genre. So remember when listening to us. This is music real, fresh and creative as one can possibly be. I hear the term jam band, bandied about, but they do little if any real improv. Mostly structured, rehearsed changes that they might jam off, but they know where they start from, and where they are going. That doesn’t cut it with us. We realize that most people find what we do hard to deal with, but for those that want absolute freedom in their music, give us a listen. Also we always do double disc sets, at least 2 ½ hours of music for the price of one. Last but not least, we incorporate all musical influences from all over the world. If it fits use it. JD

The nuts seem to be coming out in massess. Yesterday, a couple of born again religious zealots told me that the people of Burma killed in the hurricane last week couldn't expect God's protection since they weren't Christians. When I asked about the children that didn't know anything about Christ, they replied that they were paying the price of their parent's sin of not being Christian. I couldn't even reply since these people and others like them are not capable nor willing to have a rational dialogue. Since we put up our my space page, members of my family including myself, have had death threats and racial taunting made toward us both on line and on the phone. My wife and I are used to it since we both have been hassled since the 60's, some of it even came from the police and members of the government/courts. Over the years, members of the Christian right have added fuel to the fire. Well, we're still here. I got less hassles when I was an outlaw, then I get for being creative; now isn't that something! If I knew that years ago, I would have given up my outlaw ways and focused more on creativity much earlier than I did. Neither my wife, my kids, or I are going to let the nuts beat us down, whether it's politicians who destroy the environment, sell us out to the rich and powerful, or destroy the constitution then call us names or religious leaders that are idiotic, intolerant clowns or cops that are gang bangers with a badge. If I sound a little angry, well I am. We got one thing to say about and to the nuts, "screw you!" J.D.

< MySpace LayoutsMySpace Layouts MySpace Codes MySpace Backgrounds We at J.D. and the Sons of Rhythm collectively are dedicated to making creative art, music, films, and books. With over 50 musicians, artists, sound engineers, and CD cover desingers. We have been growing over the last 7 years, and we now are inviting any creative people whether as a collective such as us or individuals to contact us at my Myspace. We are trying to use the internet to interact with others on the national and international level. We need each other to keep creativity alive and not be buried by mindless crap that is overwhelming true creativity. Though some artists and musicians have been able to make money creatively for the most part though it's a struggle for the truly creative to make it financialy. Big buisness, corporate mentality runs the music industry so it's so hard to get true creative music recorded and distributed. Even most independent labels are looking for comercial success over art, mainly because it's necessary to make money.

One solution is for us to the use the internet information highway to get our art out to the world. We have been hooking up with European radio stations, other artists and people that are looking for creative art. So we invite any that sees this to contact us on this crusade to do our part in saving the world from mediocracy in the arts. After all how do we want to be defined as humans, it's not through mindless glitz, cheezy themes, cheap sex or religous proslytizing that negates creativity in all forms, that we want to be part of.

We know from experience how hard it is to be a creative force especially for those that live in areas where creativity has little or no value. We all know where that can lead. Depression, addictions, anger, and all the maladys that befall people who have no value in a society based on greed, ignorance, mediocracy, and quick fix solutions on all levels of existance. Though we are all trying to do our best to be creative forces sometimes we fall into the traps that frustration, anger, and self doubts can lead to: destructive forces. My family and I have fallen prey to that force at times. Right now my son Jayson is in prison as a result of drug addiction, the same prison I was in 20 years ago for the same reasons. So even though we are broke and having legal and physical problems we will keep our crusade for something that has value (creative forces).

Join us.

Frank from the band runs our website and my son Rickie handles myspace and youtube for us. So he will be in contact with people on the everyday level and at times we all get together to make our decisions and to discuss what other people are doing. A great example has been interacting with the jazz fusion website wenospeak.com (info on our web). Good things can only happen from interaction with others of creative juices.

So see what our collective is doing either thorugh our website, myspace, or youtube (soon). Frank, Keith, Rickie, Steve Snippert and others, all will have these sites up soon and all will be focused on what we collectively are doing. Whether it's Frank's solo work, Mike Ohm's work, Rickie and Steve's projects, Sue Buck's films or my visual art. We will have a lot to choose from. We keep expanding and with others help we all can take back the airways from childish behavior, wacko philosophies, and sexual degradation themes that are flooding the information highways.

So check us out so we can check you out.
Thanks, J.D.

Please bullshiters don't bother, but all others either in the arts or creative approches to environmental or social issues we support. Anything that is of a positive nature.

All CD's can be purchased from the site www.jdhopkins.com This is a commentary of mine and it might not reflect on others involved with the Sons of Rhythm. A couple of years ago we were contacted by a radio station in Bosnia that had been shut down by Milosavich and had their music destroyed. Major record labels refused because of legal problems with Bmi and Ascap over royalties to send any American Music for them to play. But since we're outside of any established anything we can send music to anyone we want which we did. Which makes me wonder what frightens political or religious dictators when it comes to creativity. The Taliban in Afhaghanastan cutting off drummers hands, Jazz musicians and creative artists in Hitler's germany sent to concentration camps, writers in Russia sent to Gulags and on and on. Some people really want to make existence bland, colorless, with no dynamics, taste, feel or meaning. Why is that? I've heard alot of reasons, theories and apologetic rationalizations over the 45 years, yet i still don't understand the ever present struggle between those who create and those who try to suppress creativity. Is this the way of the Tao, the yin and yang or the right brain left brain conflict i read about, the struggle between order and chaos to stabilize existence. A lot of creative people along with most humans struggle with urges oscilating between being creative and destructive. I'm still amazed at the beautiful architecture in Europe that in a few short years during the second World War was completely flattened. A thousand years of magnificent culture destroyed by the same people that built it. The blowing up of the Buddhas near tetra by the Taliban and book burnings in this country that recently happened. What the hell is going on? Sitting here in our safe little world both Susie(Buck) and I do respect the one's that have gone before us and the one's in the here and now that really pay a price to be creative. Which leads me into a angry place about people who abuse and use the creative arts for monetary or ego boosting reasons. What is wrong with us as humans? Are we that far gone when Simon of American Idol makes more in a year than probably the top 100 jazz musicians make collectively in a lifetime, or that some blonde gold digger's death gets 10 times as much coverage than the tragedy of Darfur or that mediocracy and just plain acting like spoiled little brats is a value system. I keep thinking that someday we as humans will grow out of all this madness but the madness just keeps on truckin. I'm glad i've known people who haven't given in to the madness and this My Space is sort of like a lifeline to others to help reinforce that i'm not mad. As much as i would like to think that i don't care what anyone thinks it's just another way to fool oneself. It's just really cool to know there is hip people out in the real world. During the 60's it was easy to hook into some counter culture space even in small towns or in other countries. For some reason the underground networking really worked. This younger generation has oppurtunities beyond belief. I hope you use it all. I'm sure diggin it , the possibilities in interaction blows what's left of my mind. I'm jealous in a way because i wish i had these oppurtunities in the 60's. Talking about a collective creative networking high. Hopefully we can get a virtual art gallery up soon. Trying to iron out the realities and score some guidas(money to the young) to get the project started. Thank you very much for your time. -JD Several People have inquired about me and wanted some information about who I was. Though these sites, both web and Myspace, was mainly about a collective endeavor. Here's a few pictures from my past:
