J Downs could be considered as unique as they come.
His albums are independently produced and released. His music is self-taught and self-written. Simply put, J is a powerhouse of musical talent who has only yet begun to reach the masses with songs that are fresh, thoughtful, intriguing, and full of life and meaning.
Originally emerging onto the SoCal scene in 2005, J spent much of the following year writing and recording his debut disc entitled All-Division, released in March of 2007 under his own independent label, 703 Records. The 11-track self-produced disc features J's hip-hop/rock vocal stylings delivered over a live band sound, and also includes the independently produced music video for 'Hit Em Off', directed by Byron Chan of Beyond Cinema Productions.
J's sophomore effort Cali Shine came just one year later in 2008, a 12-song rock hip-hop mash up featuring the singles 'I Wanna Party' and 'Cali Shine'. At this time, J again enlisted the help of BCP to create the 'All Day' music video which is also included as an extra on the disc.
With the release of The Breakers EP (703 Records) in 2009, J has again delivered his signature sound through an alternative rock tour de force, blending vivid poetic imagery, hard-edged rhythms, and a slight mix of the psychedelic.
"My focus is not only the overall vibe of the song, but more importantly what exactly it is I am saying and what message I'm sending to the listener. This is why I a lot of times I choose to deliver the lyrics in poetic form, through which you the listener can take the pieces and put them together in a way that makes sense to you and only you."
The Breakers EP is currently in rotation at over 176 college radio stations throughout North America and can be requested by calling the one closest to you. All of J's work can also be found on iTunes and CDBaby.com.
