It has been my pleasure to work with many of the area's talented musicians over the 17 years I've been back in South Carolina. Anything from a duo to a five-piece jazz band is possible.
Influences
Sounds Like
I've been compared to Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee, Anita O'Day, June Christy, Carmen McCrae, Diana Krall, Jane Monheit, and Phoebe Snow. It's no wonder -- these were my role models. I've listened to them over and over, taking a bit from each, and finally arriving at my own style.
CALVERT AND
COMPANY is a
Greenville-based jazz
and blues band
featuring vocalist Jean
Calvert doing standards
from both genres.
Calvert's voice has
been compared to Ella
Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee,
June Christy, and
contemporarily to Diana
Krall and Jane Monheit.
She can be swingingly
hot or sultry-cool.
Having begun performing
at the age of 3,
Calvert is a
well-seasoned singer
with an extensive and
diverse repertoire
because of her
background in church
music, school chorus
music, folk music on
solo guitar, country
music, R&B, as well
as jazz and blues.
She is just as at home
on the big stage as she
is in intimate
settings, making the
band perfect for small
rooms and private
parties, concerts and
festivals, corporate
events, and as an
opening act in big
halls. Her
impeccable delivery is
not manufactured
through sound editing;
it is natural and
reproducible in any
setting.

Testimonials:
“I
think Jean Calvert is a fabulous and swinging jazz singer! In fact,
I'm
going to send her CD to Tommy LiPuma who owns Verve Records.”
William O'Shaughnessy,
President and Editorial Director of WVOX AM and WRTN FM, New Rochelle,
New York
“We enjoyed you on Saturday night at
High Cotton. It was wonderful!”
There are serious efforts underway to promote an emerging music scene
in downtown. You'll be a big part of it, I know. I'll look
for you!”
Mayor Knox White, Greenville,
South Carolina
“An
extraordinary voice! Jean sings on pitch over a wide vocal range. Her
tone is smooth and expressive, and she is a creative improviser! She
has a large repertoire with songs that please audiences of many
ages.
“We (my husband Al and I) have been interested in jazz
singers for a
long time, beginning in the 1950s and 1960s when we were fortunate to
attend live performances by some of the great jazz performers. So the
other day, I was listening to one of Jean's recordings and
asked my
husband who was in the other room, “Who do you think this
is?” He
guessed Carmen McRae. Then Ella Fitzgerald. Finally Lena Horne.
“No,” I
said, “it's Jean Calvert!”
Carole Tinsley, prize winning
painter/collage artist, based in Greenville, South Carolina
“Jean's
delivery is always consistent – high quality! She has worked
in our
wine café, Vino 100, several times and makes folks want to
return time
and time again. Her style is smooth and classy. She has worked at her
craft diligently for many years, and it shows.”
Marti and Paul Spencer, Owners of
Vino 100, Greenville, South Carolina
“I
had no idea there was such a talent in Greenville. And as you know,
I've been in broadcasting and involved with these jazz
standards for
many, many years, so I am a tough critic. Thanks for inviting me to
your recent performance.”
Monty
DuPuy, radio and television
broadcast icon, and owner of a recording studio in Nashville, Tennessee
