At 21 years, singer-songwriter Jean Claude is already one of Malta's unique voices. Having released no less than 5 radio singles and left his mark on Malta’s top 10 chart in the first two years of his musical career, Jean Claude still has several adventures ahead of him. In 2008 he was chosen as a prospective candidate for what Malta regards as the most important music event in Europe – the Eurovision Song Contest. He refers to his Maltasong '08 experience as amazing and incredibly intense. “Being the performer, author and composer, without considering the fact that I was a newcomer, meant that I had to attend all the meetings that were held, rehearse and promote my song on TV by myself. It was all very new to me!”. Jean Claude has always written his own songs. In his words: “I write my own songs... I always have. When I was younger, and far less outspoken than I am nowadays, I found that writing my feelings on paper was the only way to release what I felt and to say what was so hard to say out loud. I still do it nowadays. Performing my own songs is something I had to get used to in time. My songs are small parts of me without which I wouldn’t be whole. Sharing them with an audience is such a unique experience”.
So when did it all start? Jean Claude has been writing songs since he was just thirteen. At the time he couldn’t play any musical instruments but with his strong determination he chose to learn the classical guitar. “I started composing when I was about 17... I still have the first song’s chords written down on an old piece of paper. The song might sound childish nowadays, but that is where it all began, so I’ll hold on to it fondly.”
In the past two years he has been working with Malta’s top producers to release his singles on the radio. He debut single, Contradiction, was one of the favourite entries for the Malta Song for Europe 2008. Jean Claude went on to release some Internet singles on his MySpace page, namely Black, Purple & Gold and Faith In You. Following that, he released Heartbreaker, Say (You Really Want Me) and more recently, a duet with fellow Maltasong singer Jessica Muscat (Together In Diversity). The latter was the Official Theme Song for Intercultural Day at the University of Malta where Jean Claude is currently reading for a B.A. in Theatre and Communication Studies.
Where would he like music to take him? “I'd love to think that doing music will be my future and I’m working for it, but mostly I'd like my music to take me in the hearts of those who listen to it, so that people can relate to what I write...” he says.
His latest single Ain’t Good Enough, can be requested on all local radio stations.
Jean Claude would like to thank his sponsors Match Music Stores (Valletta, Baystreet and Paola) and Senshi Beauty Emporium (Mosta).
