    Jeff Wong's Interests
GeneralI collect books and I enjoy having them in 1st editions. There's something about having a little bit of history on my shelf that thrills me. I like the idea of having a sense of the context in which the book was published, what the packaging was like when the book was originally issued; part of my fascination with packaging probably comes from the fact that my father was a package designer in the 50s and 60s and designed a lot of things that have taken on iconic status in American culture. Many of his achievements have gone undocumented publicly, and when the opportunity arose for him to have an article written about his ubiquitous design work in a prestigious journal when he was alive, his modesty wouldn't allow it. It saddened me, but, I respected his wishes. He didn't want to make waves, especially for those who had already claimed credit for many of the accounts he worked on. It's a small comfort that I'm the caretaker of his portfolio, which still contains the handpainted dummy for the first Milky Way bar, among other gems.

I'm fascinated by the thinking process, and because of this, I love manuscripts and sketchbooks. An aspect of my collecting books includes collecting author manuscripts. Gaining insight to a writer or artist's mind is a privilege that I cherish. It saddens me to think that as the digital age marches on, things like holograph manuscripts have given way to word processors and PCs. No longer will handwritten emendations shed light on the inner workings of a writer's mind. We're stuck with final copy in the form of 1s and 0s on magnetic discs. I feel guilty that my own work has shifted from analogue to digital in the last couple of years. Not having physical art feels wrong, but, there is no denying that the flexibility of digital has its merits.

When I was a kid, I wanted to be a comic book artist. I've done a few things here and there over the years, but, nothing major. I have a story brewing in me, that will probably have to be dealt with sooner or later. The fate of my parents seems to be providing me with a framework for some sort of magnum opus. The stuff from the depths of my past are beginning to bubble to the surface. We'll see what happens.

I play table tennis weekly.

MusicMy tastes are quite varied, perhaps, even catholic. I love the song albums of Brian Eno and happen to appreciate his instrumental work on another level, if not quite so passionately. Elvis Costello turned me onto Emmylou Harris, Gram Parsons, George Jones, and Billie Holiday. The Toy Dolls and the Dickies always make me smile. Gillian Welch and David Rawlings give me goosebumps. I enjoy the New Pornographers, Ted Leo, DEVO... I dig a lot of punk and new wave... you'll find the Clash, the Undertones, XTC, Avengers, the Specials and many others in my collection.

Sonny Rollins, Eric Dolphy, and John Coltrane can do no wrong in my book. Charles Mingus, Dave Brubeck, and Paul Desmond all have places on my shelves. Nirvana (and Foo Fighters) still work for me. The fuzz guitar of Davie Allan and the Arrows transports me to my childhood. The voice of Soeur Marie Keyrouz is out of this world. You might find me spinning the Magic Numbers, the White Stripes, Martha Wainwright, the Kills, Beck, the Penguin Cafe Orchestra, Goldfrapp, Archive, Ron Sexsmith, Jelly Roll Morton, Buzzcocks, the Beatles, Miles Davis, Sufjan Stevens, the Heartless Bastards, or Ravel in the same afternoon. There's so much more on my shelves, and even more I haven't yet discovered.

One of my passions is high-end audio. There's nothing quite like hearing a superb sound system that reveals that there's sooo much more music that you had no idea was on an album you thought you knew intimately. I understand that iPods and MP3s are convenient, but, for quality and sheer musicality, I'll opt for my he-man rig any day of the week.

MoviesI'm a big fan of the films of Akira Kurosawa and Kihachi Okamoto. There are a couple of Francois Truffaut films that are close to my heart, but, I find a good number of them only so-so. I could explore the symbolism in a Federico Fellini film for hours. That said, I have a weakness for limb-breaking scenes in Steven Seagal flicks. I adore the Zatoichi Blind Swordsman movies starring Katsu Shintaro (a huge portion of my poster collection appears as bonus material on one of the DVDs.) I'm a sucker for sappy Frank Capra films. I loved Universal horror movies as a kid and used to watch them whenever they were on TV. Lately, I find foreign films more satisfying than domestic ones, but, if something's well done and entertaining, that's all that matters. I appreciate schlock as well, but, it needs to be so bad that it achieves greatness.
TelevisionMonty Python's Flying Circus meant a lot to me as a kid, as did the Goodies. I dug the Prisoner, and still laugh at the classic 39 episodes of the Honeymooners. Naked City makes me wish I lived during the 50s. I have a soft spot for Gerry Anderson's Super Marionation programs. I used to watch the X-Files religiously. There's a ton more that I'm into, but, much of it is old stuff that is slowly coming out on DVD. As far as current shows, I feel compelled to watch CSI and House, M.D. and try to watch the Simpsons whenever I remember. I really find it difficult to look at the Family Guy; the artwork is truly repugnant, but, after watching a number of episodes, I must admit to liking some of the writing.
BooksLolita by Vladimir Nabokov is a fave - I prefer the annotated version - my grasp of French is next to nil and Alfred Appel, Jr.'s notes are invaluable. A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole is a book I wanted to bring with me to reread in New Orleans, where much of the novel takes place, but, that ain't gonna happen anytime soon. Ross Macdonald and Martin Amis take up the most space in my library. I enjoy Irvine Welsh, but, find I nearly have to read his books out loud to fully grasp the Scottish accents he writes. I really got a kick out of Altered Carbon by Richard Morgan. It was sort of a hardboiled detective novel in space, and super violent and inventive.

I enjoy caricature books, good and bad (for perverse reasons.)

HeroesIt occurred to me that I didn't really mention any artists, so this is as good a place as any to offer some thoughts.

The boldness and playful quality of the later work of Joan Miro impresses me. I suppose the child-like qualities of the work of Paul Klee and Wilfredo Lam have a similar appeal. I love the power and movement in the paintings of Franz Kline and the balance of Piet Mondrian. I don't really care for Henri Matisse's paintings, but, I appreciate how daring it was to do what he did in light of what his contemporaries were producing. I like his paper cutouts. I appreciate the grace of Gustav Klimt and the angst in Egon Schiele. After spending so much time with Michelangelo Buonarroti's Sistine Chapel paintings, I came to the conclusion that he was a far better sculptor than he was a painter, and I firmly believe Gian Lorenzo Bernini was a better sculptor than Michelangelo.

As I think about this more, I should stop here, otherwise you'll be scrolling way too much. If you ever meet me, ask me about the comic book artists and caricaturists that have influenced me and we'll talk about it - the list is long.
