About me: I served six years in the U.S. Navy before earning a BA in English and an MFA in Creative Writing. I’ve held writing positions at a major daily newspaper, a Fortune 500 company, and a university-based research center. I edited the anthology “Home of the Brave: Stories in Uniform” which features the work of Kurt Vonnegut, Tim O’Brien, Tobias Wolff, James Salter, Pinckney Benedict, Chris Offutt, Robert O’Connor, Gabe Hudson, Benjamin Percy, Amber Dermont, Roman Skaskiw, Zoey Byrd, Valerie Hamilton, Blaise Weller, Sarah Davis, Mary Akers, Tracy Crow, Kevin Jones, Hannah Huber, Bruce Overby, Peter Schilling, Tom Sheehan, Doug Frelke, and Max Ruback. My writing has appeared in corporate publications and websites and in The Houston Literary Review, American Skating World, the Tampa Tribune and Writer’s Journal. Currently, I live in Tampa, Florida where I’m completing a novel and lead a creative writing workshop for military veterans.
Who I'd like to meet: My agent, my editor, and eventually, my readers.
But in the meantime, I also work privately with creative writing students who have served in the United States military, in some capacity, at some time. For more information on this, visit www.dd214writers.com or contact me through this page or via my email address jjhess@dd214writers.com.

It was great seeing you in NYC. I loved hearing your plans for DD214. Forward march. You guys should've come dancing. It's hilarious to see writers busting their moves. But spiritual somehow, too. I wondered how many of us were taking notes. I know I was. ~sheryl
