I believe that music is about connecting with the human soul. It is an art form that begs for honesty and longs for hope. All the while most songwriters, myself included, find themselves singing about their darkest moments and most painful experiences. But in sharing these stories with others, we break through the biggest barrier of humanity – feeling alone and unloved. I hope that people relate to my music. And perhaps as we share our experiences we might recognize our own value as human beings.
My passion for music has grown over time. As a preteen, I was awestruck by the scene in Back to the Future where Michael J. Fox played “Johnny B. Good” and scared the audience with his face-melting guitar solo. I became determined to buy my own guitar, so I washed cars, mowed lawns, delivered papers, chopped wood and eventually I got my hands on a beginner electric guitar. I also started singing in the children’s choir at church and even got the lead role in a church musical. Through the years I played in various bands at high school, church, and college. Meanwhile, I wrote my own music, played some live shows, and recorded a few demos. All of this ended up being good practice for starting a music career.
During the last four months of 2008, I recorded Dark Before Dawn with producer Adam Loewen. Adam is a good friend of mine, so this made for a comfortable creative atmosphere. His home studio was like a sonic laboratory and my songs were the experiments. This artistic endeavor was life-giving for me. I hope people enjoy the album as much as I do. I look forward to continuing in creative efforts and connecting with people along the way.
