Jeff Mariotte's Interests
|
| General |
Books, movies, TV, comics, pop culture, politics, the American West (historical and mythical), nature, photography. And I collect vintage Western wear. | | Music | Varied musical tastes, ranging from the genius of Brian Wilson to the whole country rock-folk rock movement (Byrds, Flying Burrito Brothers, Buffalo Springfield, CSN&Y, Loggins & Messina, etc., right through to Venice and the Jayhawks and the Gin Blossoms), Joe Jackson, Steely Dan, U2, Springsteen, Paul Simon, Carly Simon, Van Morrison, the Indigo Girls, the Waterboys, Calexico, Shawn Colvin, John B. Sebastian (& the Spoonful), Miles Davis, Zoot Sims, Marvin Gaye, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, John Mayall and associated British bluesers, Dave Stamey, Big & Rich, Gretchen Wilson, traditional cowboy music...and that's just for starters, off the top of my head.
Just realized I neglected to mention one of my all-time favorite bands, The Guess Who--the greatest Canadian rock band ever. | | Movies | Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid. The Conversation. Apocalypse Now. Casablanca. A Night at the Opera. Never Give a Sucker an Even Break. Marathon Man. Jaws. The Searchers. Manhattan. The Wicker Man. The Graduate. These are all movies, right? Good ones, too. Lots more also qualify. I also love B Westerns. | | Television | Sadly lamented: The Wire, The Shield, Generation Kill, Extras. The Office. 30 Rock. Reno 911. Other stuff.
Older favorites include Arrested Development, The Dick Van Dyke Show, both Newharts, The Avengers, The Persuaders, It Takes a Thief, The Man From U.N.C.L.E., old B Western shows like Roy Rogers, Sky King, etc.
The Daily Show, the Colbert Report, the Rachel Maddow Show and Countdown with Keith Olbermann for news and newsiness. | | Books | That I've written, or that other people have written? If other people, I'll stick to authors who are dead or who I don't know well, so I don't slight any friends. Angle of Repose, by Wallace Stegner. Desert Solitaire by Edward Abbey. Shogun by James Clavell. To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Blue Desert by Charles Bowden. Rage by Clay Reynolds. Irwin Shaw, William Goldman, Ira Levin, Ross Macdonald, Stephen King, Thomas Gifford, Graham Greene, Raymond Chandler, Robert E. Howard, Fritz Lieber.... We own thousands, if not tens of thousands, so you really don't want to get me started. | | Heroes | The people listed in the other categories will do for starters.

About me:
Here's the official bio:
Jeff Mariotte has written more than thirty-five novels, including supernatural thrillers River Runs Red and Missing White Girl, original horror epic The Slab, and Stoker Award nominated teen horror series Witch Season, as well as books set in the universes of CSI: Miami, Supernatural, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Conan, 30 Days of Night, and more. Two of his tie-in novels have won the Scribe Award for Best Original Novel from the International Association of Media Tie-in Writers. He is also the author of more comic books than he has time to count, including the original Western series Desperadoes, some of which have been nominated for Stoker and International Horror Guild awards. He is a member of the the Western Writers of America, the International Thriller Writers, and the International Association of Media Tie-in Writers. With his wife, Maryelizabeth Hart, and partner Terry Gilman, he co-owns Mysterious Galaxy, a bookstore specializing in science fiction, fantasy, mystery and horror. He lives on the Flying M Ranch in the American southwest with his family and pets in a home filled with books, music, toys, and other examples of American pop culture. More information than you would ever want to know about him is at http://www.jeffmariotte.com .
My official blog.
I've added some photos to "my pics"--mostly not of me, but photographs I've taken in the last couple of years, a semi-random sampling of some of my favorites. Check them out. If you want to see pictures of all my book and comic covers you can find those at the website linked above.
2008's novels included 30 Days of Night: Eternal Damnation, based on the bestselling comic book series, and co-written with Steve Niles, the author of that series.
Next was CSI: Miami: Right to Die, based on the most watched dramatic TV series in the world.
Following that came River Runs Red, which is part of a loosely linked border trilogy (connected by theme and genre, supernatural thriller, rather than by characters and story) that began with Missing White Girl. There's more info about MWG below. Click on the book cover to go to the special River Runs Red website!
Finally we had Spider-Man: Requiem, starring everyone's favorite webslinger.
The project that got the most attention this year was the comic book biography Presidential Material: Barack Obama. I appeared on CNN, Fox News Channel, Reuters and elsewhere, and was interviewed by most of the nation's biggest newspapers (and some smaller ones) and the Associated Press (twice). It's currently in its fifth printing, and has been nominated for multiple awards.
2009 started with Zombie Cop (in my Top Friends list--add it as a friend) from Image Comics/Shadowline.
That was followed by the Graveslinger trade paperback collection (co-written with Shannon Eric Denton),
then the Desperadoes Omnibus, collecting every Desperadoes story ever published, both from IDW Publishing.
In June, Cold Black Hearts,
the follow-up to Missing White Girl and River Runs Red will be released by Penguin/Jove. There are other comics (including two more Barack Obama books and my original series Garrison, from WildStorm/DC), novels (including CSI: Brass in Pocket and 30 Days of Night: Light of Day), and short stories on the way too, so stay tuned!
When a white girl is missing, all America watches. Missing White Girl is an original supernatural thriller in which a mixed-race family is brutally murdered, and their teenage daughter kidnapped, while local law enforcement is already consumed with the case of a local missing white girl. The case has tendrils reaching through time to the earliest white explorers of the American southwest, involves the controversy of border vigilantes, and races toward a heart-stopping showdown.
Click on the book cover above to be taken to the Missing White Girl website, with an interactive map, photos, excerpts and more!

Who I'd like to meet:
I've met most of the people who would be on my list. I haven't met William Goldman or Nikki Cox, though, so they'll do for now.
Oh, you mean on MySpace? Anyone interested in books, writing, horror, history, the West, photography, film, comics, or any of my other interests, which are legion.
