Austrian Symbolist Gustav Klimt (1862 - 1918) fathered at least 14 known children with different women. Much of his art was censored or confiscated. Some of his best works were destroyed by retreating German SS troops. They blew up the castle displaying these, just before the advancing Soviets took Vienna in May 1945.

Self-portraits by Dutch/Flemish Expressionist Vincent Willen van Gogh (1853 - 1890). He remained unmarried, suffered with mental illness, and was supported by his brother. Either he or Gauguin cut off a part of his ear in 1889, and he shot himself the following summer.

French Impressionist Edouard Manet (1832 - 1883) survived two wars in France. He married his father's mistress and adopted her son (who could have had either man as the father). He died of syphilis and from shock, just after having a foot amputated because of gangrene.

French Impressionist Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841 - 1919) survived two wars in France. He married his mistress and legitimized their son. He suffered with severe rheumatoid arthritis and pneumonia, and spent the last half of his life crippled in a wheelchair.

Norwegian Expressionist Edvard Munch (1863 - 1944) suffered with alcoholism and mental illness, and never married. Many of his works were confiscated, destroyed, or stolen. Without his consent the Germans in Norway gave him a Nazi state funeral when he died.

Swedish viking Varangians rowed their ships up and down the Volga River in the 800's and 900's. They sailed across the Caspian Sea and raided Persia. The Slavic peoples called them Rus, from which the name for Russia originates.

Viking Ships in a Norwegian Fjord

The southwestern fjords of Greenland were settled by Vikings from Iceland in the 980's. They were led by the Norwegian chieftain Eirikr the Red. His son Leifr would later explore the coasts of eastern Canada.

The Norwegian viking Leifr Eiriksson sailed from Greenland along the coasts of eastern Canada in the summer of 1003. He explored Baffin Island and Labrador, and then Newfoundland, where he built a small settlement on its northern peninsula. (Painted by Christian Krohg in 1893)

The barren rocky cliffs and glaciers of Baffin Island in eastern Canada, which the Vikings called Slab Land (Helluland). They found it to be worthless as any place to try to settle, but sailed along it as it was closest to Greenland.

The Wonder Beaches (Furthustrandir) of Labrador in eastern Canada, between Groswater and Sandwich bays. The Vikings were awed by these 38 miles (56 km)of sandy shoreline, visible far out to sea. They called the region Wood Land (Markland) for its pine and spruce forests, and there are abundant tall grasses they described as resembling fields of wheat.

Newfoundland in eastern Canada has several kinds of edible currants and wild berries - such as black, blue, elder, and goose. The Vikings consumed these as wine berries (vinberjar), and so named the place Wine Land (Vinland). These are actual photos of berries growing wild in southern Newfoundland today.

The Battle of Lake Peipus in Estonia. The German forces of the Livonian Order of the Teutonic Knights were led by Prince Hermann von Buxhoveden. They attacked the Russian forces of Prince Aleksandr Nevsky of Novgorod, in April 1242.

Castle Dracula in Transylvania Romania

Prince Vlad Tepes fought against the invading Ottomans in the 1460's and 70's, torturing and executing captured prisoners on tall stakes. He was called Son of the Devil (Draculea) by his Romanian contemporaries, and also known as Vlad the Impaler, for killing thousands of Turks in this way.

King Karl XII of Sweden in 1706

The Swedish Army of King Karl XII advanced far into the Ukraine. They fought against the Russians, under Tsar Peter the Great, at the Battle of Poltava in June 1709.

King Karl XII was killed in battle at Halden, and the Swedish Army retreated carrying his body, in December 1718. (Painted by Gustaf Cederstrom in 1878)

Battle of the Pyramids. Painting by Francois Watt

The French Army of Emperor Napoleon invaded Russia, in June 1812. They fought their largest battle at Borodino on the Moskva River. The Russian Army retreated, and the French then captured Moscow, in September 1812.

Napoleon's French troops occupied and looted Moscow, while the Russians burned and evacuated it, in October 1812.

Napoleon was informed that there would be no official reply from Tsar Aleksandr in Saint Petersburg, and that Russia would not agree to any peace treaty.

Emperor Napoleon of France, abandoned a completely destroyed Moscow and withdrew from Russia, in November 1812. (Painted by Ernest Meissonier in 1814)

In the First World War the Battle of Tannenberg in East Prussia was decisive on the Eastern Front. The German 8th Army of General Paul von Hindenburg surrounded and destroyed the entire Russian army of General Aleksandr Samsonov, in August 1914.

Major General Orde Charles Wingate commanded British forces in World War II. He won victories in the mountains and deserts of Ethiopia (1940-41) against the Italians, and in the jungles of Burma (1942-44) against the Japanese. His forces specialized in operating behind enemy lines, greatly helping to win the war for the Allies.

"Nicht kleckern. Sodern alle Klotzen!"
Generaloberst Heinz Wilhelm Guderian (1888-1954). During the Second World War the Germans invaded the Soviet Union, in June 1941. Guderian's panzer army almost took Moscow - winning the war for Germany, in November 1941.

Generaloberst Eduard Dietl commanded the German 20th Army in Arctic Norway, Finland, and Lappland from 1940 to 1944. His forces helped the Finns defend their country, against the more numerous Soviets, in the northern Karelian region.

German panzer units advanced deep into southern Russia, in 1942. They reached as far as the Caucasus Mountains, between the Black and Caspian seas, with the Soviet forces retreating before them.

The German 5th SS "Wiking" Panzergrenadier Division was composed of volunteers from Denmark, Estonia, Finland, the Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden. They advanced furthest to the Terek River, flowing from the Caucasus Mountains to the Caspian Sea, in October 1942.

Generalfeldmarschall Erwin Rommel commanded the Afrika Korps and German-Italian Panzer Army. He fought in the deserts of Egypt, Libya, and Tunisia in northern Africa, 1941-43. He was always outnumbered by the Allied forces - especially British - arrayed against him.

That time of year thou mayst in me behold
When yellow leaves, or none, or few, do hang
Upon those boughs which shake against the cold,
Bare ruined choirs where late the sweet birds sang.

In me thou see’st the twilight of such day
As after sunset fadeth in the west,
Which by and by black night doth take away,
Death’s second self, that seals up all the rest.

In me thou see’st the glowing of such fire,
That on the ashes of his youth doth lie
As the deathbed whereon it must expire,
Consumed with that which it was nourished by.

This thou perceivest, which makes thy love more strong,
To love that well which thou must leave ere long.

“Memory is a way of holding on to the things you love, the things you are, the things you never want to lose.”

“This is not remarkable, for, as we know, reality is not a function of the event as event, but of the relationship of that event to past, and future, events. We seem here to have a paradox: that the reality of an event, which is not real in itself, arises from the other events which, likewise, in themselves are not real. But this only affirms what we must affirm: that direction is all. And only as we realize this do we live, for our own identity is dependent upon this principal.”

    thank you for your friendship

To be happy with a man you must understand him a lot and love him a little. To be happy with a woman you must love her a lot and not try to understand her at all.

    Dein Herz schlägt
    am Abgrund
    Die Nacht umhüllt
    dein letztes Wort
    So grausam
    So achtlos
    reißt dich das Schicksal
    von mir fort

    Ich lass dich los
    Muss mich befrein
    denn meine Sehnsucht
    holt mich ein
    Auf ewig dein

Verzeih mir – bleib bei mir
    und ich sagte noch Vergissmeinnicht
    Ich schenk dir zum Abschied
    ein letztes Licht
    Vergissmeinnicht

    Dein Blick sinkt
    ins Nachtrot
    Ich reiß mich los
    mit letzter Kraft

    So grausam
    So heilig
    liegst du vor mir
    Es ist vollbracht

Diesmal wird es für immer sein
    Auch diese Wunde wird verheiln
Ich reiß mich los muss mich befrein
denn unser Schicksal holt uns ein

Hey! Give me a listen, you corpses of cheer
Least those of you who still got an ear
I'll tell you a story make a skeleton cry
Of our own jubiliciously lovely corpse bride!

Well our girl was a beauty known for miles around
When a mysterious stranger came into town
He was plenty good lookin', but down on his cash
And our poor little baby, she fell hard and fast
When her daddy said no, she just couldn't cope
So our lovers came up with a plan to elope

So they conjured up a plan to meet late at night
They told not a soul, kept the whole thing tight
Now her mother's wedding dress fit like a glove
You don't need much when you're really in love
Except for a few things, or so I'm told
Like the family jewls and a sachel of gold

Then next to the grave yard by the old oak tree
On a dark foggy night at a quarter to three
She was ready to go, but where was he?

    And then, everything went black
Now when she opened her eyes she was dead as dust
Her jewels were missin' and her heart was bust
So she made a vow lyin' under that tree
That she'd wait for her true love to come set her free

Always waiting for someone to ask for her hand
Then out of the blue comes this groovy young man
Who vows forever to be by her side
And that's the story of our own corpse bride!
