Sounds Like
real roots music that scratches and breathes, then bumps elbows with folk, gospel, ambient and world
"Climb Yourself Up" was recently listed in the New Haven Register's Top Ten local releases of 2008. The "Climb Yourself Up EP", AVAILABLE NOW ON CD BABY, includes 5 original tunes, Experimental and moody waltzes with gospel-folk arrangements that are not stifled into one genre, but breathe with an organic sound of their own.
Visit the CD Baby site for digital download, and discs. http://cdbaby.com/cd/ponybird The "Climb" EP is also available through ITUNES and RHAPSODY now!!! A new video for “Let Something Fall Apart” is available here on our myspace page, and You Tube.
"These sparse folk tunes are spooky and smoky, dark but warm, the kind that would sound best on a back porch sometime in mid-September with a bonfire crackling and a cooler nearby. Every song is played in 3/4 time (think waltz), each with its own trance-inducing properties. The arrangements are simple and therefore shine — there's no extraneous instrumentation." - Mike Sembos, New Haven Advocate
About Ponybird:
Named after heralded hit song "Jennifer Juniper" by Donovan, I was brought into the world by two musical parents. One, a church going folk singer who treasured Janis Ian, and two, a rock rebel with his guitar in a cardboard box and a penchant for Ian Hunter. My musical life (or life as a musical perhaps), was destined to be an adventure of oscillation and inspiration. As a wanderer, I have had the honor to share community with several native traditions, including African and Native American, as well as harmonic tonal singing, which continue to be deeply influence and inspire my creative endeavors. As a Musician, I have played drums with local heavy rock bands: Belle Starr, Spider & Fly, the Editors, and cut my teeth on folk performing in the Karner Blues with Christina Abbott. Being so closely involved with grassroots music helped me to generate a contagious momentum to create music of my own, solo, (with a little help from guest performers). I now continue to write my own songs and play gigs here and there... As Ponybird flies and gallops off into the sunset.
The Past is Passed…
Some folks might remember me from writing on art and music for notable publications such as the New Haven Advocate, Lucid Weekly, and Verbicide Magazine, and the weekly local music show on WYBC, That Hour Long Music Show Hour, with co-host Craig Gilbert. Today, I continue to ghost write and photograph for local venues, labels, and independent bands, as well as share in the integration of spiritual communities throughout the North East, teaching and participating in an assortment of workshops and ceremonies.
