Jennifer Johns Innovative, driven, compassionate, and powerful…just a few words that come to mind when attempting to describe Oakland, CA born singer, songwriter, and spoken word artist and emcee Jennifer Johns. However, her first experience on stage was at church at the tender age of 3 and she hasn't stopped since. Reflecting on her diverse musical influences as a youth, from Earth, Wind and Fire, Phoebe Snow, and Sade, to Paul Simon, Whitney Houston and Sweet Honey in the Rock, as well as the , West Indian rhythms that filled her home as a youngster. And with that an introduction became… Became is a curious word used in that text, but let me explain. He understood upon introduction that something was different and though unsure what, he decided to let patience be his guide because despite the lack of clear understanding, he did know that it felt good. She, conversely, pursued him with an unbridled fervor and though unsure about his hesitation, she too stayed engaged because it felt good to her as well. Soon their positioning centered to his patience matching her fervor causing them to stand side by side, which lead to a unified understanding: the initial question that offered introduction wasn’t for the moment but yet to secure a past-time, a life. Alas, the question… was merely a starting point to which there is no end. Suddenly, public terms like “anniversary”, “the first time we kissed”, “can I hold your hand”, “I like your smile”, and “I wanna hold you” merely gave a glimpse into what they held sacred, love. Theirs is one that consistently presents brand new, so their introduction seemed to be on repeat.
