    Jenny Lindsay's Interests
GeneralI LOVE: enquiry, JAMES WATERMAN, curiosity, ART FOR ARTS SAKE, art for the sake of principles, DISCOVERY, when it all falls into place, even if it disappears a day later, the power of the SPOKEN WORD, my parents divorce, POLESON, laura, MY FAMILY, when the reality is better than the dreaming, RED WINE, almost getting away with it, GETTING AWAY WITH IT COMPLETELY, days off, DAYS ON, running THE BIG WORD, peanut butter on toast, WAKING UP AND NOT HAVING TO GET UP, reading in the bath, PRACTICING POEMS IN THE SHOWER, finishing poems and liking them, THE RANDOM SQUIRREL THAT TEASES THE CAT IN MY BACK GARDEN, edinburgh, JAMES' CD COLLECTION (mine is shite), FINALLY LETTING GO OF THE IMP THAT BUGS YOU, reading, WELL TIMED ESCAPISM, train journeys, GIGS OUTSIDE OF SCOTLAND WHERE I CAN CHURN OUT THE SAME OLD SHITE, jamming with LAURA, comfiness, FEELING SAFE, not being scared of death and the future (BOTH ARE INEVITABLE AND PERFECTLY NATURAL), being judgemental, CRITICS, bravery, HOSTING POETRY SHOWS, drinking while hosting poetry shows, LOVING WHAT PEOPLE THINK OF ME, NO MATTER WHAT IT IS ( this is a work in progress :), crows feet, GETTING OLDER, learning, MY UN-KILLABLE CACTUS, james cooking (yes, there is a theme here...), letting myself dream, STAYING INSIDE IF I WANT TO... I HATE: accepting things/being forced to accept things at face value, WHEN TORIES CLAIM TO BE LIBERALS, the state of political journalism, UNSPEAK, the power of corporations, THE MISUSE OF THE WORD 'LIBERAL', people who argue that we shouldn't 'judge' each other, simply because we are from different backgrounds, WOMEN WHO'LL STILL CALL THEMSELVES 'GIRL' AT FORTY, men who cheat and say its in their nature to 'spread their seed' then leave their partner if they succeed in planting said seed, SCREWBALL LOGIC, circular arguments, THE RISE OF RELATIVISM, deepak chopra, THROWING UP SPAGHETTI, the bottom of the bottle, DYING ON STAGE, being ripped off, BAD ARGUMENTS, size zero, MISSING PEOPLE WHO'RE NOT COMING BACK, pretty much all advertising, PEOPLE WHO THINK BORIS JOHNSON IS 'HARMLESS', the style of election coverage, PEOPLE WHO SHOUT 'JUMP' AT SUICIDAL PEOPLE ON BRIDGES, lack of empathy, SELFISHNESS, liars, COWARDS, purposeful idiots, SENTENCES BEGINNING WITH "I'M NOT A FEMINIST, BUT/ i'M NOT A RACIST, BUT/ I'M NOT A TORY, BUT....", people who can't distinguish between porn and sex, THE TOTAL ACCEPTANCE OF PLASTIC SURGERY, bridget jones being an idol for women, PLANTING THE TERM 'FEMINIST' ON ANYONE WHO EXPRESSES A SENTIMENT THAT DIFFERENTIATES THEM FROM A DOORMAT OR A PROSTITUTE, accidentally eating soap (don't ask), ARROGANT STAFF IN CLOTHES SHOPS, £8 for a pint of rubbish. Amongst other things.
Music...is good, especially when it has lyrics. That are good. And not lazy. I cant stand the mockney Brit School accent... I've read better poetry on cereal packets than a lot of our supposed 'modern day Shakespeares' are supposed to have churned out from their parents ten bedroom houses in Surrey... And cereal packets aren't even supposed to be poetic. Perhaps their songs aren't either. Anyway: music is fun, to play and to listen to. Except when you have dreams that you are naked and doing the former. On a stage. With people watching. I play the piano and melodica in a band called Laura Lewis & The tea Dance Orchestra, and also have a cheery alter ego called Cheer Up Jenny, which is apt...apparently. I approve of misery in major chords.
Moviesare also good. I like some of them, like The Departed and Memento and lots of other one's, especially ones that make me miserable or happy. Some of them are bloody shite though. Like Bridget Jones' Middle Class Anti-Feminist Nonsense Aren't Women STill So Stupid? Or one's where the geek turns goddess. Or some 'hero' dies for the love of some twat with the personality of a caravan park and enough brains to fill an eggcup. And won't it be funny in the future when our children scorn us for our love of car chases in films? "Mummy? Do you know that the CO2 emissions in that scene helped to fell the last elm?" "Yes dear. Now shut up and help me row."
Television... does not serve just one master, regardless of what all those bloody poets tell you (he he he): tis good for some things...like information and escapism :) Buffy, Black Books, Curb Your Enthusiasm, CSI, Joss Whedon in general, apocalyptic tv series, South Park (the later years especially), Channel 4 news (for information and ties), BBC News (for their access to places others cant get to - though Breakfast should be taken off the air and replaced with white noise for all the headaches it has put on top of my headaches every morning), Five News, to encourage my bile... You see, we are so lucky to have so much visual stimuli. To the point where notable academics call terrorist attacks 'texts'! Man, we're so cultured. Even reality can be 'read' and 'perused' and 'deconstructed.' Apparently even food can be too now. What you do is, you take all the ingredients, rip them apart, set them out in little seperate bowls and containers and look at them. The difference between deconstructed food and deconstructed 'texts' of 'reality' is that eventually the deconstructor of food will put it all back together again in one way or another, whereas the deconstructor of 'reality/texts' will leave all the parts of the meal lying there on the plate. And say, 'mmmm' a lot. Maybe prod it a bit. Then write a book about it. That has no punctuation or actual words in it. Anyway: tv. Its okay. Lots of model shows though.
BooksMy bookshelves are the best thing about me. And they're broken and sagging to the left :) William Morris, GEORGE ORWELL, BERTRAND RUSSELL, J. S Mill, HEINRICH BOLL, Arthur Koestler, KURT VONNEGUT, Philip K Dick, William Golding, NICK COHEN, STEVEN POOLE, Stephen Ingle, FRANCIS WHEEN, H.G WELLS, Jonathan Swift, MARGARET ATWOOD, Tim Lott, Germaine Greer, KATIE ROIPHE ("The Morning After" should be requisite reading for those who think feminism is about making women victims and celebrating it).... ) I like to read and write about politics, philosophy, our Christian legacy, Britain, democracy, the left, feminism, ethical socialism... as you can see, I am attempting to be remembered as the patron saint of completely fucking lost causes :)

HeroesPeople who believe in truth. People who admit they don't know the answer, but at least want to try to know the answer, instead of (as is the fashion) saying that the answer doesnt exist and anyone who says otherwise is a pawn of satan/Bush/Blair/Brown/Women/Men/the PC Brigade/Israel/Palestine/Monkeys/Chimps/Whales/Dolphins....The list could go on. People who don't reduce life, love and politics to black and white fundamentals. I can oppose a war and still believe its important to remove a dictator. I refuse to clap my hands at the death of anyone. I can see both sides points of view and still come down in favour of humanity, liberty, democracy and truth - not because its my 'socially constructed reality' (far from it), but because reason and empathy leads me to them. I give those who disagree with me the courtesy of taking what they say at face value. I dont think everyone is always lying, all the time, for whatever price. My enemies enemies are not my friends. I can abhor my own government and feel disgust at those who murder people as an attack on said government. I can feel sick at bulldozers and suicide bombers; paedophiles and vigilantes; actions and reactions; reactions and counter-actions; counter-actions and recurrences; history and now: And so my heroes are those who know the battles worth fighting, the protests worth protesting, and what love is and what friends are. And, those who believe in truth, and that its something worth championing. If history does keep repeating itself? Tis only because noone is listening...

Morris would be a wonderful name for a dog, particularly if it were bright eyed and gregarious and hairy.

I have a book He signed ... and an etching of Him by Leonard Baskin ... who was friends with Ted Hughes ... I have a signed Birthday Letters ... I am straying from the point ...

Yes, he was inspirational in so many ways but most of all for being a great-hearted, generous-spirited human being.

I know what you mean about his poetry, although I think it's partly because it's very much of its time. However, 'October' and parts of 'The Message of the March Wind' are amongst my favourites and can make me weep.

Hey Jenny,

How goes it?

Sorry it's a bit spamtastic.

We’re playing the Captains Rest in Glasgow with Leeds band 15 Stories and Glasgow’s very own Acrylic Iqon.

We'll be giving folk the chance to get their paws on an advanced copy of our début album 'The Lamps of Terrahead' on the night.

Hope to see you there.

All the best,
