Jenny LEWIS is a Scottish singer-songwriter. She writes and performs music with an original folk and roots feel. Her Scottish origins, French life and experience as a progressive rock singer can all be heard in recent works. The songs deal with very diverse themes from traditional love songs to more abstract or philosophical issues.
Jenny Lewis entered the musical world at a very young age playing folk music with her family and listening to artists such as Cat Stevens, Joni Mitchell or the Beatles... So performing was no mystery to her when she joined the Jazz / Funk band Elemental at the age of 15. Jenny sang with Elemental for three years and played in many well reputed concert halls around Scotland such as the Fruit Market in Glasgow or the Venue in Edinburgh. Keen on writing and composing her own songs Jenny arranged to meet the owner of Waveform studio and composer / arranger Trevor Riley to record a song which was played on Radio Clyde. At 19 years old the success of this song encouraged her to further develop her own writing style. Studying at art school in Aberdeen helped Jenny with the conceptual and creative side to her song writing. There she composed several songs and when the opportunity arose to perform them with the great blues guitarist Tim Shoben at the Lemontree theatre and arts venue she couldn’t refuse.
The next obvious step for Jenny was to record an album so she decided to look for a producer. At the age of 25 Jenny left Scotland for Paris where she was very lucky to meet the musician & producer Vynce Leff. They immediately decided to record a progressive rock album together and form the group Sensitive to Light. The two artists signed to the U.K. record label Cyclops which distributes to various outlets worldwide. Here are some of the reviews about Jenny’s vocals:
« Evidemment, il ne faut pas oublier le point fort de l’album : le chant. Jenny Lewis, la chanteuse écossaise du groupe, est en quelque sorte « la star », apportant une richesse vocale insoupçonnée et une inflexion celtique des plus touchantes. Plus simplement, elle est l’une des plus belles voix dans le giron du « classic prog » ces dernières années. »
«Jenny Lewis, coming from Scotland. She sings from the pure and high tones of children choirs to those, more mature, of singers like Kate Bush; the fact that she mixes more experimental tones like Björk is also interesting. »
Jenny performed at many concerts around Europe for the release of her first album. This permitted her to meet and share stages with some of the greatest musicians in France in the genre of progressive rock. Sensitive to Light gave shows in reputed venues such as "Le Triton" in Paris, "Eclipse" Festival in Bordeaux, "Progsol" in Switzerland, "La Nuit du Rock Progressif" in Ville D'Avray …
Aswell as working with Vynce Leff, Jenny signed a contract with "La Mante Productions" for a multilingual pop / rock album called "People". This album was written and recorded in collaboration with producer / guitarist Bernard Gionta and contre tenor Robert Expert. She also composed and featured in a video clip which is presently being shown on "Europe 2 TV" and "mcm pop". For the album release she performed in numerous venues like the "Auditorium" in Vincennes, "La Fleche D’or", in Paris and several showcases in "Cultura" music stores in and around Paris.
Jenny is presently working in Paris as a singer, song writer and guitarist and recording a new solo album with sound engineer and musician Marie Delebarre from ensembles intercontemoporain" at La Cite de la Musique. She has so far recorded with great musicians such as Eric Maria (Cello), Nathalie Shaw (Violin), Sylvain (percussion) and there's more to come
