Jennifer Mitchell was born in 1974 in Atlanta, GA. After winning the 2004 Georgia State Honors Recital Competition for her trombone quartet, In Memory of Jerry, Ms. Mitchell graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Music degree in Trombone Performance at Georgia State University (GSU) in Atlanta, GA. In 2007, she completed her Masters in Music Composition at GSU under the guidance of Dr. Nickitas Demos.
Ms. Mitchell has written for the Georgia Youth Brass Band (Atlanta Impressions for brass band, 2006), the GSU Percussion Ensemble (Soundscape 2 for DJ and percussion, 2006), the GSU Brass Ensemble (Aqua for Brass Ensemble, 2005), and was commissioned by the 2006 International Euphonium Institute for her Celebration Fanfare (2006) for antiphonal brass quintet and euphonium quartet. She was commissioned by Colin Williams, principal trombone with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, for Pneuma (2006), written for trombone, double bass, and marimba.
Ms. Mitchell’s Bamboo Blossom (2005) was chosen to be included on the vanity cd, In With the New: Vol. 2, a juried compilation released by the GSU Student Chapter Society of Composers, Inc. (SCI) to be released in late 2006. This follows In Memory of Jerry (2002) and Subtle Reflection (2003), both chosen to be included on the vanity cd, In With the New: Vol. 1, released in late 2005. In 2009, she was awarded Composer of the Year by the Atlanta branch of the National League of American Pen Women (NLAPW).
In October, 2005, Ms Mitchell guest lectured at GSU on the life and music of Pulitzer Prize winning composer, Michael Colgrass. Upon his visit to GSU in 2005, she was his personal assistant for the duration of his residency. Ms. Mitchell was also involved as a composer-in-residence at Centennial Elementary School with the award-winning Sound Learning program through GSU in 2006-2007.
Ms. Mitchell is an active member of the Society of Composers, Inc. (SCI). Since 2004, she was an officer in the GSU SCI Student Chapter, holding positions from Events Coordinator to Vice-President. She is also a member of the American Music Center (AMC) and the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP).
In addition to composition, Ms. Mitchell is a professor of Music Theory and Aural Skills at Kennesaw State University. She currently performs with the award-winning Georgia Brass Band and the Cobb Symphony Orchestra, and can be heard on "Traveling Without Memory", the debut experimental ambient electronica album by Vancouver-based Gunshae.
Ms. Mitchell has also been a DJ since 1994, performing under the name Little Jen throughout the North America with the biggest acts in electronic music. Little Jen has mastered the art of combining lush soundscapes over crunchy beats in everything from ambient to drum&bass. “Lullabye,” her first electronic music endeavor, was released by Sonic Soul Recordings in 1997 on Cloudwatch: a Freeform Gathering. She was voted DJ of the year in 1998 on the Sonic Soul website and Reader’s Choice: Atlanta’s Best DJ for 2005 in Atlanta’s Creative Loafing. She has been reviewed in such magazines as Urb, Elemental, and the Jive magazine website. In addition to her busy club schedule, she has also performed multimedia pieces with Atlanta-based new music organizations Bent Frequency and Sonic Generator. Having completed remixes of a range of composers such as Stravinsky and Mozart, little Jen’s electronic excursions can be heard at Fringe, the Atlanta-based classical chamber music series. She can currently be heard djing locally in numerous lounges, clubs, and bistros in the Atlanta area.

Dear Jen: Thanks for the add. You have wonderful diversity of approaches to making music on your site. I appreciate the somber elegance of your chamber writing on the one hand, while grooving on your delightful recontextualizations of old chestnuts in funky dance mixes on the other hand - as well as both feet and all the rest of me. I'll check your site to find find out where you're running jams the next time i'm down ya'll's way in Atlanta. Thanks, gil.
