Jeremiah Clark is a Baltimore-based folksinger and songwriter, a desperate criminal and conman who has been making music for the last five years with his band, the Lighter Thieves. They have performed throughout the mid-Atlantic region, as well as spent a summer performing in Alaska, trying to win over good-hearted, simple-minded folks with a blend of subversive preaching and the devil’s music. They sound like a raggedy pack of washed-up hepcats, out for one more prowl. They play with a certain abandon, and a little desperation, like they just realized that the whiskey has run out, and they won’t be able to go buy anymore until they finish the show. They have little regard for authority figures, and seek to incite rebellion under the guise of "social protest". Their main goal, however, seems to be to excite the womenfolk, whilst reminding the boys of the dangers of excited womenfolk. Beware this band, who have ruined so many hitherto virtuous souls.
The soon-to-be-released "Bone" is the first solo recording from Jeremiah Clark. It is a collection of folksongs written and sung by Jeremiah, accompanied by his guitar and harmonica, and by Pa Clark on upright acoustic bass and harmonies. The songs deal with such timeless subjects as heartbreak, desperation, broken-down pickup trucks, poor decision-making, war, politics, frollicking in a grassy meadow, payin’ for it later, addiction, friendship, Eskimos, corporate greed, keepin’ awake till dawn, and women. Anyone who can’t identify with this stuff oughta check and make sure he’s still above ground. Good luck to ya.
The Lighter Thieves have two albums with Jeremiah to their credit. "North", released earlier this year, and "Starvation Box", from 2002. Sharon Clark plays violin with a classical background, a love for folk music and a gift for songcraft. She also lends her gorgeous voice to many of the songs, including a couple of her own. Pa Clark has played bass long enough to know everything, and his experience roots this band firmly on the ground, while his harmonies and mandolin soar through the sky. Sandy Kramer plays drums with a gift for subtlety, while never losing the backbeat. Jim Finch is one of only a handful of people on this planet to play dobro with such a transcendent style and finesse.
These guys know what the hell they’re doin’. Watch out.
