In the early years: James Jamerson, Jaco Pastorious, Paul Jackson, Alphonso Johnson. Steve Swallow, and Dave Holland. More recently I've been influenced by Marcus Miller, Brian Bromberg, Tom Kennedy, Victor Wooten, Christian McBride and Richard Bona. After having mixed T.O.P. for several years, the impact of Rocco Prestia's playing on me is immeasurable!
There's a saying,"I wasn't born in Texas, but I got here as fast as I could!" Born in Portland, Maine (1954), "I got" to Texas in 1979. I have over 35 years experience as a bassist and sound engineer, with a strong background in R & B and blues grooves. Studying at both Berklee College of Music (1975-76) and North Texas State (1979-80) helped me define my true passion for jazz. During the 1970's I worked most of the major show clubs around the US, including long stints in house bands in Las Vegas and Atlantic City. Into the 80's and 90's my career took a side road and I became a successful sound engineer for such talented artists as Ratt, Jimmie Vaughan, Tower of Power, Stephanie Mills, Levert, The O'Jays and many, many more. In 2002, I decided to take a break from touring. I have worked hard to refocus on my playing and develop my jazz fusion trio, Miles Ahead. Last summer I spent a couple weeks on the road, dusting off the mixing chops with the band Los Lonely Boys, and have recently been out for a few shows with Regina Bell. Check out the sites for the two bands I'm currently involved with: The Sonnier Brothers Band, and Miles Ahead.
