Influences
Nick Drake, Gillian Welch, Louvin Brothers, Will Oldham, Uncle Tupelo / Son Volt / Wilco, Townes Van Zandt, Steve Earl, Guy Clark, the whole damn Carter Family (especially Mother Maybelle), Johnny Cash, Iron and Wine, Califone, Red Red Meat, Dwight Yoakam, George Jones, Emmylou and Gram, Old Crow Medicine Show, Smog, Richard Buckner, Merle Haggard
Jeremy Yocum and the Last Rounders rose from the ashes of Brooklyn-based Oceanographer to reform as a country-tinged quartet. And what else should you really expect from Yocum, who has Texas roots, a professed love for Hank Williams and George Jones, and a dog named Emmylou? Being that Oceanographer was best categorized as “shoegaze”, this is mellow, mellow country folk that focuses on the melody, not least because there is neither bass nor drums in the quartet’s current line-up. Jeremy Yocum leads the band with vocals and guitar, while fellow Oceanographer-alum Eric Elterman shares vocal duties and adds understated viola fiddling. Mattley Mountain and Brian Hersey round out the Rounders with harmonica and rhythm guitar respectively. All together, the Last Rounders create atmospheric country in line with Iron and Wine and Norfolk and Western, with lyrics that plumb the bottom of the whiskey barrel for inspiration. The group is currently in the studio putting finishing touches on their LP Sound of the Wind...
(We’ve since added Anna Denbo (of Inlets, Midnight Risers) on piano and banjo, Derek Milhem on slide guitar, his brother Riley Milhem on bass, Andrew Mendenhall (of Money Paper Hearts) on drums, and Greg McMullen (of Hula) on pedal steel.)

I regret that I couldn't make the show on Saturday. I was REALLY looking forward to it. But I had to set up my new painting studio, and it just was pulling me by the balls. I will make it up to you by making you all ewok style hoodies!
Saw the show last night with a few friends. We all enjoyed it much. Jeremy, your voice is one of my favorites, warms me like no whiskey ever could. Keep up the great songwriting, and, please!!, some more shows!
I enjoy the lugubrious beauty of the music of JY and the LRs. As a one time resident of the fine state of Kansas I can say, "Carry on my wayward sons."
Wow Brian.. your playing music that I actually like :) (lets not get into your heavy metal guitar playing years) I must come to one of your shows sometime soon!!!
One comment comin' up! Jeez I miss the nice little live shows in Brooklyn. It's nice having kick-ass electro an' all but I'd like to have my cake & eat it too. Somehow with the lack of bleeding heart country and 21 year old front men my desire to drink has slowed to a trickle. Oh and they don't have single batch bourbon here. But it's not all bad...
Seriously enjoyed the set yesterday. Wish I could have stuck around for Whiteshoes. Umm. I wrote this a couple days ago, but hesitated to tell ya'll on account of the poor writing. http://www.thedelimagazine.com./ (2nd item down, I believe).
