Ending the war in Iraq immediately, and prosecuting those responsible for this alleged "war on terror." Making sure that the veterans of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq get the help they need to heal from the experience.
Spend too much time listening to tango chill lately.

Movies
I have a pact with myself to show certain films to as many students in Oklahoma as possible while I am here, hundreds have watched them, you can too.
Soldados: Chicanos in Vietnam, by Vietnam vet Charley Trujillo, available at chusmahouse.com, I show this in almost every class, a former student, Oklahoma National Guard, who just refused to go to Iraq told me on the phone "Remember that movie you showed Soldados?"
Zoot Suit-I watch this over and over and never get tired of it. I don't know why. The students like it too.
Deacons for Defense--Although fictionalized, along with a good friend who actually was a civil rights activist in the south, I decided that this film touches on many of the key and often subtle issues in a very real way.
Savage Acts--if you have access to a college library, look it up and order it, it concerns racism and the imperial United States, focussing on the war in the Philippines at the turn of the century.
The Fight in the Fields--The first thing I was ever involved in, when I was 13 and 14, was the United Farm Workers. Although mostly about Cesar Chavez himself, and missing a lot of key points and events, I think this film gives my students a real taste of what real people's movements were like.
Books
Again, books that I want as many students to read in Oklahoma as possible, hundreds have read them, you can too.
Talking Back to Civilization: American Indians in the Progressive Era, edited by Frederick Hoxie--a collection of writings by educated Indians, circa 1890-1920.
America is in the Heart by Carlos Bulosan--his book starts in the Philippines and heads to the West Coast in the 1930s, as Carlos Bulosan immigrates first to Seattle then to various parts of California, working in canneries and fields, and becoming an organizer. This is a brutally sad book.
Negros With Guns by Robert Williams--a segue between the more celebrated aspects of the civil rights movement and the development of more radical resistance, in particular the Black Panther Party. This book was published in 1962 and had a tremendous impact on young activists at the time
With His Pistol in His Hand: A Border Ballad and Its Hero by Americo Paredes--First published in 1958, there are people in Texas who are still riled about this one because of its view of the Texas Rangers. You will like reading this book, guaranteed.
Rebellion in the Borderlands: Anarchism and the Plan of San Diego, 1904-1923 by James A. Sandos--What? Rebellions? In Texas? Open season on Mexicans? What? How come nobody ever told me about this? Armed bands of Mexican-Americans attacking the King Ranch after they read anarchist newspapers? Anglo vigilante groups killing Mexicans? Is this really Texas?
Southern Horrors and Other Writings: The Anti-Lynching Campaign of Ida B. Wells, 1892-1900 edited by Jacqueline Jones Royster--This is a woman who had a lot of nerve. A collection of pamphlets published by Ida B. Wells that tell the truth about lynching and race and sex in the South.
Heroes
Heroes? I always find ordinary people more heroic than all the talking heads put together.

jeri Still sick and tired of the war after all these years Posted at 1:53 PM Apr 2, 2008 view more
About me: ..
I'm the mother of an Iraq vet, Cody Camacho, OIF March 2003-March 2004. I don't have any mercy for war criminals at all, and am very irked that George Bush, Cheney, Condy, Colin Powell, Rumsfeld, and all the rest of them think they will just return to their lives as millionaires and billionaires, while many of the rest of us, the soldiers and their families, and ALL of the people in Iraq and Afghanistan will endlessly suffer. I say eternally burning in hell, which they will surely do, is just not enough for them.
Who I'd like to meet: George Bush, Dick Cheney, Condaleeza Rice, Donald Rumsfeld, and any of the rest of them that would have the nerve, but only before some kind of binding International War Crimes Tribunal. I don't like Lynne Cheney much either, so you could throw her in too. Surely there is some crime against humanity that she has committed, certainly the way she and her good pal Laura would like to rewrite history is crime enough.

Hello Jeri, thank you very much for adding me back. I love reading your blog so I thought I would just add you so myspace can update me :o) Thank you for all your hard work with veterans and inspiring so many to work harder at ending this war. I have been against the war from day 1, so its amazing to finally see people waking up about it and wanting to do something about it. I wish I had done something about it from day 1 since I was against it...but I was not even sure how to go about things like that. You inspire me to want to help my husband with this cause, because it is very worthwhile and the soldiers and veterans need all the help they can get. Ever since he went to Lawton, he has started to find his way, and started to find his place with IVAW and I am so super proud of him. I wish you all the luck in the world, and please let me know if I can do anything for you...if its within my power, I got your back!! xoxo
Jeri, I like the song on your profile. Thanks for sharing. Have you heard the Kite Runner Soundtrack? I saw the movie this weekend and the music is beautiful. Amazon.com has samples of it and so does the movie's site.
Y'all seem to be sending some crazy wind down our way. BRRRRRRRRRRRR!!! Stop it! We were really diggin on our perfect winter, even if it was a sign of the apocalypse!
Yeah everything is actually going great. We passed Tim's anniversary of when he went to Iraq (Dec 5, 1990) a few days ago without any problems, thank GOD! And I have final exams next week. Then I'm FREE for 5 weeks. I should have a clean house during that time, out of sheer boredom. But of course I'll be plotting for IVAW Cleveland, and you know finding so much stuff to do that my vacation will not be a vacation for long. I hope you're doing well too. Peace, Yvette
