Ska returned from it's hibernation after the 1980's to gain a short lived explosive popularity getting big in the mid-nineties and then abruptly losing it's mainstream appeal. However, it just went underground. Dun Bin Had's self-titled seven inch, out now on Jerk Off Records, is the quintessential example of that underground ska sound. It's an amalgamation of punk rock, in the vein of the pissed, melodic, and anti-pop—grimple—and fast paced skapunk reminiscent of bands like: Operation Ivy, The Readymen, and the Rudiments. The song "21 Shots," is a drinking song that doesn't leave a bitter taste. The song "Frivolous Complaints," exemplifies the band's love of Grimple's musical style. The song "Empty Parking Lots," sounds like a pissed off letter to an ex-girlfriend or a shitty boss. The song "Headline Lose," is a song that shows Dun Bin Had's ability to smoothly switch between genres. The song "Happy Days And Hand Grenades," is my personal favorite. The melody will stick in your head and make you sad that there is only one song left on the EP. The song "Different Faces," is not your cliché drinking song. This song makes me long for the weekend well stuck in the monotonous weekday routine longing for a drink—the message behind the music. If you pick up this EP, you will find yourself screaming along while your record player blares out the six best songs Dun Bin Had has birthed thus far.
