Jerre Haskew is a Singer/Songwriter with roots going back to the folk era of the 1960s when he was a founding member of the prominent folk group, The Cumberland Trio, which appeared three times on ABC-TV's prime time Saturday night series, "Hootenanny" and won the National Collegiate Folk Festival 1st Prize. The Trio recorded in April, 1964 at RCA in Nashville, TN in historic Studio B produced by the legendary Chet Atkins.
He wrote his first song, Song For A Drifter, in 1963, and has been writing off and on ever since that time. His catalog includes in excess of 100 songs of the genres- Folk, Country, Pop, Americana, Gospel, Blues & Bluegrass. His writing affiliation is with BMI and his publishing company is Fiery Gizzard Music, LLC. Jerre resides in Chattanooga, TN on beautiful Elder Mountain on the eastern brow, overlooking the city and the Tennessee River. His songs are a wide variety of autobiographical, topical and observational compositions. He writes when the "Muse" comes to visit, and basic lyrics and melody are usually done quickly. He co-writes with his wife, confidante and best friend of 45 years, Barbara Short Haskew, who is an accomplished songwriter in her own right, including the hauntingly beautiful, universal and topical "I Wish I Were A Babe"-her signature "gentle protest" song written in early 1964 during the tumultous times of the Civil Rights movement in the Southern USA.
In 2000, Barbara had a beautifully illustrated (by Patricia Mayes) children's book, "A Lion Named Sam" published as her wedding anniversary present to Jerre based on the song of that title written by Jerre in 1963. The two of them perform a program called "The Power Of Sam" for children and adult groups, with Barbara dressing and performing in her signature Sam the Lion costume, while Jerre sings children's songs, including "Sam." This effort sparked the reuniting of The Cumberland trio, which has performed two major reunion concerts in 2001 and 2004, both of which have been recorded and released on CD and DVD. The DVD s have been shown on PBS TV stations throughout Tennessee and on You Tube, and the Trio's music is receiving airplay on over 600 FM radio stations throughout the world. The Trio's original 1964 RCA LP was remastered to CD and relesed in 2001. All CDs and DVDs are on the Haskew independent label, Fiery Gizzard Records.
Jerre and Barbara's daughter Holly is an accomplished vocalist as is their granddaughter Sarah, both of whom have recorded several of their parents'/grandparents' songs for the forthcoming Haskew Family CD, "Songs From The Fiery Gizzard," to be released in the fall of 2009. Jerre's songs on this My Space page include "Waffle House Blues" and a DEMO version of "The Lady Of The Highlands," both of which will be featured on the upcoming Haskew Family CD. Also featured are other songs written by Jerre & Barbara- "The Wonderful One Eyed Beaudog," "A Lion Named Sam" & My Rockabye," along with a great cover of Dolly Parton's anthem, "Coat Of Many Colors." All are performed in live concert with The Cumberland Trio. www.cumberlandtrio.com & www.myspace.com/thecumberlandtrio. ENJOY!!
