Music
As in most things, I can find something to value and enjoy in all kinds of music. My music collection includes about 500 different albums ranging - both alphabetically and musically - from Bryan Adams and the Bloodhound Gang to Frank Zappa and Rob Zombie. (My favorite artist settings on my XM Radio include Beethoven, the Coasters, Elvis Presley, Jim Croce, CCR, Queen, Billy Joel, Elton John, Metallica, Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Green Day, Lenny Kravitz, Gorillaz, Eminem, Maroon 5, BNL, Brad Paisley, and Jeff Foxworthy.) Nevertheless, usually I just listen to country, hip hop, or hard rock (when I can find it). As in most areas of my life, I also especially enjoy anything different or unusual - for instance: Yat-kha, Ravi Shankar, electric violin. I used to play classical music on the piano and cello myself, but now I'm afraid that I just don't have the time.
Movies
Not surprisingly, I also appreciate all kinds of movies. Watching movies for my work has changed the way that I view them in general, though, which has its good and its bad sides. The BBC version of Jane Austen's PRIDE AND PREJUDICE has always been a favorite though.
Television
I almost never watch TV. It makes me feel as though my IQ is dropping, and the invasiveness of the commercials and the way that the news forces you to take in all of it in order to see what you actually want (as opposed to just turning the page as in a newspaper) truly scare me. I make exceptions for Wolverine football games, when I can, and certain other specific programs once in a great while (such as the Discovery Channel's MYTHBUSTERS and DIRTY JOBS). When would I find the time anyway?
Books
Reading books for (academic) work has resulted in much the same thing as watching movies for work, with the added issue of the practically limitless amount of such reading that I should do for work and the obviously limited amount of time that I actually have to do so. That makes reading for fun practically a sacrificial act ... and thus I'm afraid that I don't get to do it very often anymore. The downside of doing what you love for a living, I suppose. I do listen to a lot of books on CD while I'm commuting in my car, though. Unfortunately, I think I'll have exhausted the selection at my local libraries long before my commuting days will end. At any rate, my current favorite non-academic author is Barry Eisler - who is also, incidentally, on my Friends List.

I am a first-year Ph.D. student in the English Department at the University of Arizona. I live with my husband Dennis (friend no.1), our son Alex, my grumpy old cat Sophie, and our two beautiful greyhounds: Crosby (3 yrs. old) and Celia (2 yrs. old).
My research interests are 20th-century and contemporary American literature, film, and popular culture from the perspectives of minority/ethnic/race studies and feminist theory, with an emphasis on mothering studies.
Be sure to check out my awesome MySpace video collection!
I am still mourning my dear old friend, Karl John Krumrey IV (10/2/80-5/20/07).
Who I'd like to meet: I love intelligent and witty conversation and learning new things.
Hey Jessica! I am playing an intimate solo show at Angel’s Serenity in Scottsdale this Sunday. I have a bunch of new originals and have learned a bunch of new covers (radiohead, coldplay, terrance trent d’arby!, the shins). Its going to be like VH1 Storytellers. Hope you can make it. Details at the website. See you Sunday!
BTW, have you seen my website discussion board? It's a fun forum with a lot of interesting people from all over the world talking about the Rain Fall movie (recently wrapped shooting in Tokyo and NYC), the next book, writing, politics, single malt whisky, and anything else that strikes people's fancy, and we do a monthly chat on writing, too, so if you have a chance, stop by and say hello. It would be good to see you there...
I always do trivia night! I got to learn something some where right? that and the poker games and the movies when they happen? I've done one supper club.
