In the stormy seas of rock'n'roll, a glimmer of light shines in the form of a breathy, young and sometimes quirky songstress named Jessi Canning.
From her childhood, Jessi has been surrounded by music that has exposed her to a wide range of influences, though now she finds herself drawn to artists such as Aimee Mann and Sam Phillips. And the result: a sound and style that would best be described as introspective "sparkle-pop."
Jessi learned the guitar at 14 and began writing songs shortly thereafter. After her first recording efforts with Bill Campbell (The Throes, Poole) at the production wheel, she began playing a steady stream of local bars, pubs, and other venues in the Mid-Atlantic region.
In 2004, Jessi was pleased to release a little mint. Deriving the title from the translation of Canning's Native American middle name, a little mint features five original songs written by Canning and one co-written with Tulsa, Oklahoma musician and college friend Josiah Borgos.
'a little mint' was produced by Washington, DCs Todd Wright (The Getaway Car, Lucy Woodward, Pat McGee Band) and by award-winning Tulsa, Oklahoma musicians Tony Romanello (TRB) and Josiah Borgos (TRB). Other guest appearances on 'a little mint' include Matt Miceli (The Getaway Car) and Mark Williams (Jonasay).
Several tracks from a little mint have garnered press attention and have found homes in other media. "Cider Night" was named a Washington Post's Mp3 Top 10 Pick and her edgy guitar-driven "Pieces" was featured on the Blizzard Blue Volume 1 and Oklahoma Championship Wrestling Soundtrack. Tracks "World in Gray" and "Cider Night" appear in the independent film Lackluster Syndrome. Several tracks from "a little mint" are used on DirecTV, as well.
Just as mint and a good dose of PopRock are refreshing, so are the six songs which range in style from indiePop with sparkling guitars to moody and electronic but always pop-rock-melodic with sublime honesty, hope, and passion.
