“I want to leave an imprint on the hearts of people. I want to leave this world remembered for my songs.”
So speaks Jessica Pomerantz, a powerful new voice in the alt pop scene. But what does it take to make it in the music biz besides good intentions? Luck, talent, connections, good genes? Looks like Jessica has them all. Cousin of famed singer Phoebe Snow, Pomerantz’s new demo, featuring the explosive “Rock Bottom,” carves out a place for a powerful, emotive voice in a crowded marketplace.
She’s an Ivy League grad with none of the destructive habits endemic to the music industry, “Except that I have the heart of a poet,” says Pomerantz. “I feel the highs and lows more than most people.” Her history? “I used to sing at ‘Smoky Joe’s’ on the University of Pennsylvania campus back in my student days. I’d close the place down. They used to call me ‘the Janis Joplin girl,’ as I always closed with ‘Bobby McGee.’ But I couldn’t be more different than Janis—at least in our backgrounds. I’m sure she’d agree that to live is to sing and to write. I write constantly and sing in intimate venues around NYC.”
Scratch the surface, and you’ll find this newcomer is really a veteran—a veteran radio promoter, gaining the respect and attention of industry pros in her early 20’s. But Pomerantz’s true passion has always been on the other side of the microphone. And the release of her galvanizing new demos could cement her place in New York City’s long list of female vocal performing stars.
How does she work? “I write when I feel passionate about something, or devastated. I collaborate with an award-winning songwriter/composer in Portland, Maine, where I record. I love the laid-back atmosphere and talented players and producers I have found there.” You can hear it in her hook-laden new EP, “Embrace the Empty.”
Stylistically speaking, Pomerantz honed her own alt-pop rock/soul style via an eclectic pallet of influences that range from Fiona Apple and Missy Higgins to Led Zeppelin and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. One of her producers teasingly calls her sound “bubblegum metal,” but more than anything it is addictive pop music with an edge--featuring bold, soaring vocals and lyrics straight from the heart.
As she continues to make the rounds on New York’s electric live music scene, frequenting such high-profile venues as Sullivan Hall, Arlene’s Grocery, The Bitter End and Ashford & Simpson’s Sugar Bar, Pomerantz garners glowing reviews.
