All sorts of things, depending on who I'm playing with. I play loads of trad Irish, write a bunch of my own stuff, play with singer songwriters and play Oldtime and Bluegrass, so I just love mixing it up and seeing what comes out!
Originally from Suffolk, England, I've made my home in the beautiful Rocky Mountains of Colorado for the last ten years. Coming from a huge, musical family, I've played the fiddle for about 27 years, getting hooked on trad Irish music through my Dad's Irish family, American Folk through my New Mexican Mum and later British and Irish music through the vibrant folk scene of Northern England where I lived while studying at Durham University.
I currently play full time with Gaelic Storm, which means touring around 235 days a year internationally with a great bunch of lads. Being the only girl on board, I can say its been quite the education! In July 2008 we released "What's the Rumpus" which debuted at No.1 on the Billboard World Music Charts, and has stayed in the top ten world music Itunes downloads since its release.
Since then, things have been as busy as ever with tours all over the USA, Australia and the high seas of the Caribbean as we've toured with some of our favorite bands on the Rock Boat including Sister Hazel, Stephen Kellogg and the Sixers and many more, The Cayamo Cruise with Lyle Lovett, Emmi Lou Harris and friends, Ships and Dips with Bare Naked Ladies and Sarah McLauchlin. 2010 is promising much madness on the high seas - look for us on the Rock Boat and maybe some others too......
2009 is a bit of a blur really.....In the month of June alone the band has traveled thousands of miles, gone high speed sailboat racing, skydiving (new favorite thing ever), and fended off crazy transvestite pick-pockets in New Orleans - never ending adventure! We're headed to my home state of Colorado to perform at Telluride Bluegrass Festival for the late night Saturday slot on June 20th, and I can't wait to get on home ground with the crew at this awesome festival! Milwaukee madness is also approaching where we'll be headlining each night of Irish Fest in August, as well as fantastic festivals all over USA and Canada right through till October. This fall we plan to be recording the next Gaelic Storm album.
Outside of my work with Gaelic Storm recent projects include a string of gigs in Ireland with New York based banjo player, Darren Maloney and with Colorado based girl group, The Moody Sisters". I've also worked with my favorite songsmith of all time: Gregory Alan Isakov in his band The Freight, recording on his beautiful album: That Sea, The Gambler and with UK based singer-songwriter, David Ford. Past projects have included forming The Wayfarers with Christel Rice, Jefferson Hamer and Sean Sutherland, becoming the first Irish Band to compete in the Telluride Bluegrass Festival Band Competition, placing second in 2003.
When not on the road with Gaelic Storm, I play Oldtime, Bluegrass and Folk Music with various musicians in the USA and Europe, and also teach fiddle workshops and classes, and work as a producer and session musician. I'm currently in the early stages of putting together a solo album.
