Bio
I grew up in Avon Lake, Ohio and moved to Athens, Ohio for a college education. I have always loved singing. I started playing guitar in 2006 and by 2007 I was performing on stage. My love for performing grew even more when I started writing my own original songs. My sound has undoubtedly been influenced by a wide variety of musicians and friends. For a few years, I performed solo and acoustic in Athens and several other Ohio cities. In 2009, I met singer/songwriter Kyle Martin and guitar player Casey Davis. Together we formed a band, called Duke Junior & The Smokey Boots. We released our first album, Bag of Bones, in early 2009. The album is comprised of songs written by both Kyle and me. Soon after, we added drummer Aaron Lemley and multi-instrumentalist Matt Horne and began playing all over Ohio and surrounding states. We are currently finishing up a new E.P. which we will be releasing within the next few months. Athens is such a great little town that is incredibly supportive of live music. Much of what I have accomplished with my music is a direct result of the inspiration and encouragement I have received from this town and the people in it. -

Sounds Like
"Jess plays music and performs from a place inside of her that heals the holes that you have. Her voice is smoky and significant – she is a sympathetic storyteller that not only sings but shares something about herself – her success and her solitude, her delight and her darkness. Her music made me feel as though I had just found a forbidden fortune, something I’d been foraging for but couldn’t find." Sarah Fincham, soundplantmag.com "Jess Kauffman drew in a growing crowd with her soulful voice. Singer-songwriter Kauffman took a modern twist on county-blues twang, channeling both Loretta Lynn and Fiona Apple." The Athens News "[Bag of Bones] It's a heartfelt tune, not only with Kauffman’s beautiful voice flowing peacefully, but also with acoustics causing the soul to melt with something like internal satisfaction." Hannah Cook, ACRN.com "The musicianship is oustanding. It is so refreshing to hear a band of young musicians performing such pleasant folksy sounds. Do yourself a favor and add 'Bag of Bones' to your collection." North Coast Voice Magazine "Some of the best country songwriting and musicianship we've heard in a long time! Their songs and strums recall Steve Earle, Loretta Lynn and Gillian Welch - good-natured, earnest and country music the way it ought to be played." CityBeat (Newport, KY)
