Born in Montreal Canada, this talented singer/songwriter has been singing since age five. At age six, she began piano lessons and continued for eleven years before turning her attention towards becoming a vocalist. Music and singing have always come naturally to her; talents that she has been blessed with, along with an incredibly accurate ear. Her love for rich harmonies and the blending of voices inspired her to join a Gospel choir as a teenager.
As a lead vocalist (Soprano) of the Umoja Gospel choir, Jewelle’s interpretation of songs by Karen Clarke-Sheard left audiences awestruck. How did such a small frame house such a powerful voice! Her voice has been likened to Chaka Khan and Patti Labelle. Wow, can she soar! She has performed at the Maximum Blues Festival in Carleton Quebec, the Saskatchewan Jazz Festival, and for the National Film Board of Canada. Jewelle has also performed at Montreal’s International Jazz Festival Special Edition Celebration with Oliver Jones (Millennium Concert), and at the Martin Luther King Achievement Awards. Her studio performances include recordings with Peter Ranallo, Mishka and Sonia Benezra.
While continuing her passion for Gospel music, during the last several years Jewelle has performed at a variety of Montreal venues with several Montreal recording artists including Freddie James, Pierre Perpall, Dawn Tyler Watson, Michelle Sweeney, and Shirley Murray. She was a back-up vocalist for Jacynthe’s (of KLM Records) televised concert in Montreal and has sung back-up at cultural festivals, singing in Italian and Portuguese with various Montreal artists. In addition, she has performed extensively at the Club Tremblant resort and internationally in Guadeloupe, Morocco and the Middle East.
A riveting and versatile performer, Jewelle opened for Matt Dusk at a gala function in Toronto. Jewelle was also a featured artist on the television program, Belle et Bum, with Normand Brathwaite, March 2008.
Currently working on her first solo album. When asked what style her music is she answers, “It’s feel good music!”. A unique mélange of R&B, Swing, Pop and Rock with profound and honest lyrics. Listen for yourself and see why people are talking about Jewelle McKenzie.
