jezebel's Interests
|
| General | Walking. Skiing. PS2. Clearing up cat crap. Painting (art not decorating). Decorating. Tattoos (mine and other people's). Fantasising.... Fiction in all forms. Drinking when not driving. Driving when not drinking. Casting musicals in my head (I want to see Lemmy as the high priest in Jesus Christ Superstar). | | Music | I like clever music like The Clash (writing songs about the Spanish Civil War? If you say so, Joe). I like noisy music like QOTSA. I like Kirsty McColl because there is no accounting for tastes. I like Placebo much more than I like My Chemical Romance (a bit contrived, I feel). I change my taste in music even more frequently than I change my taste in men.
The Cramps are excellent to drive to - I have to be able to concentrate on the music when I listen to Joy Division, so that stays out of the car. The Dogs d'Amour were a much maligned band - and justifiably so! Still have a soft spot for them.... Gomez are too clever for me but I listen anyway. Echo and the Bunnymen still do it for me after all these years... | | Movies | Where to start? Anything by Tim Burton - very obvious - or Terry Gilliam - with the exception of Baron Munchausen - maybe a bit less obvious. Scary, stylised violence, psychologically disturbing - I'm in. Johnny Depp. Christopher Walken. Bruce Willis. The Crow. Siin City. Then again, I like Westerns. Basically, I don't like war movies (the violence is real) or romantic comedies. And I like some war movies! I like John Carpenter and David Cronenberg and Wes Craven and Nic Roeg and Ken Russell. I don't know if the word I would put before my taste is "eclectic" or "no". I still believe that the centurion scene in Life of Brian is the funniest thing ever filmed, and it cheers me up far more effectively than prozac. I cry too easily at films - I cried at Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence which is fair enough but I cried at Titanic which I thought was pure cheese. I'm a bit TOO good at suspending my disbelief... | | Television | I watch way too much clever American crapola - from The Simpsons to Nip/Tuck via Buffy TVS and 24. For a nation that get slagged off as a bunch of overweight dimwits (not my opinion, just what I hear) they make extremely innovative fiction. They make Desparate Housewives. We make Footballer's Wives. There has to be something wrong somewhere. | | Books | I am so severely addicted to reading that I am not even going to go there. Because I would waste a lot of valuable reading time......Actually, it occurs to me that I might mention a few names just to see how many like-minded types are into Sheri S Tepper, Diana Wynne Jones, John Varley, Alastair Reynolds, Iain (M) Banks, Mary Renault, Robertson Davies, Neil Gaiman, as well as the usual suspects..... | | Heroes | I don't have any. I don't trust them. They come galloping up on their big white horses thinking they can sort the world out by committing sustained acts of violence against endangered species... Serioulsy. Relying on heroes has got us into this mess. Heroes are glory hunters, not saviours. They will ride roughshod over you and everyone else to achieve their goals. I don't want some musclebound pinheaded pillock to rescue me, thanks. I can do the job myself. And if I need help, I'll ask a friend. Or my mum. |

About me:
I've got hidden depths that should probably stay that way for everyone's sake. I've also got a cat. I like fiction in all forms - comics, books, films, TV are all excellent ways of visiting another reality for a bit and of course you are less likely to get traveller's tummy if you go via the sofa. I counterbalance my sofa travels by going up mountains a lot and walking around thinking nothing. And sometimes I come down mountains very fast. On wheels or skis or my arse.
