    Jeff's Interests
GeneralI'm a fun loving guy, I love to travel and spend time in the great outdoors camping, fishing, and hiking. I just like getting away from everything sometimes. I also really enjoy going to concerts and festivals and that kind of thing. I read a lot, I don't ever want to stop learning. I like to cook for mysef and I really like throwing together some really gourmet meals when I have company over.

Quotes I like.

"Laws that forbid the carrying of arms...disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes."

Thomas Jefferson

Yet another jurist, Justice Story (appointed to the Supreme Court as an Associate Justice by James Madison in 1811), wrote a constitutional commentary in 1833 ("Commentaries on the Constitution of the United States"). Regarding the Second Amendment, he wrote (source):

The next amendment is: "A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed." The importance of this article will scarcely be doubted by any persons, who have duly reflected upon the subject. The militia is the natural defence of a free country against sudden foreign invasions, domestic insurrections, and domestic usurpations of power by rulers. It is against sound policy for a free people to keep up large military establishments and standing armies in time of peace, both from the enormous expenses, with which they are attended, and the facile means, which they afford to ambitious and unprincipled rulers, to subvert the government, or trample upon the rights of the people. The right of the citizens to keep and bear arms has justly been considered, as the palladium of the liberties of a republic; since it offers a strong moral check against the usurpation and arbitrary power of rulers; and will generally, even if these are successful in the first instance, enable the people to resist and triumph over them.

"The beauty of the second amendment is that it will not be needed until they try to take it."

Thomas Jefferson

"It is no measure of health to be sane in an insane society."

-- Krishnamurti

As civil rulers, not having their duty to the people duly before them, may attempt to tyrannize, and as the military forces which must be occasionally raised to defend our country, might pervert their power to the injury of their fellow-citizens, the people are confirmed by the next article in their right to keep and bear their private arms.

Tench Coxe

"The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government."

Thomas Jefferson

"God forbid we should ever be 20 years without such a rebellion. The people cannot be all, & always, well informed. The part which is wrong will be discontented in proportion to the importance of the facts they misconceive. If they remain quiet under such misconceptions it is a lethargy, the forerunner of death to the public liberty. We have had 13. states independent 11. years. There has been one rebellion. That comes to one rebellion in a century & a half for each state. What country before ever existed a century & half without a rebellion? & what country can preserve it's liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon & pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots & tyrants. It is it's natural manure."

Thomas Jefferson letter to William S. Smith Paris, Nov. 13, 1787

"Arms discourage and keep the invader and plunderer in awe, and preserve order in the world as well as property... Horrid mischief would ensue were the law-abiding deprived of the use of them."

Thomas Paine

The Purpose of the Militia Clause

"Collective rights theorists argue that addition of the subordinate clause qualifies the rest of the amendment by placing a limitation on the people's right to bear arms. However, if the amendment truly meant what collective rights advocates propose, then the text would read "[a] well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the States to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." However, that is not what the framers of the amendment drafted. The plain language of the amendment, without attenuate inferences therefrom, shows that the function of the subordinate clause was not to qualify the right, but instead to show why it must be protected. The right exists independent of the existence of the militia. If this right were not protected, the existence of the militia, and consequently the security of the state, would be jeopardized." (U.S. v. Emerson, 46 F.Supp.2d 598 (N.D.Tex. 1999))

   Jeff's Blurbs
About me:
I was born and raised in Portland, OR. I grew up with two younger brothers and a little sister. I now live in Hollywood which I must admit is much cooler than Portland. It rains to much there and I've got a thing for palm trees. I've traveled a lot and have lived all over the country, including Denver, Philly, Colorado Springs, Phoenix, Sacramento, Santa Cruz, and now here in the city of angels.

My main job is doing Business Development for a Search Engine Optimization Firm in Manhattan Beach. I also run a few side businesses, including a cigar event company, and a few websites selling natural healing products like salt lamps and himalayan bath salts You can see some of my portfolio here.

I'm really big on fitness and working out. I started taking it pretty seriously a couple years ago, and I swear the more you go the more you want to go.

Besides that I just like to hang out with friends, maybe go to the beach or just do whatever puts a smile on my face.

Hit me up on IM: .. jeffhvipsem Yahoo: jhenderson419

Who I'd like to meet:
Cool people, creative thinkers, entreprenuers, go-getters, hot chicks, just about anyone who smiles a lot.

"You cannot be free by obeying the rules. You cannot be free by waiting for someone to rescue you. You cannot be free simply by hoping for a brighter day tomorrow. Freedom comes from within. It does not come from without. It does not come from a charismatic leader. It does not come with a set of instructions. It does not come from being raised with doses of discipline and dogma. It does not come from being given your freedom only after you prove yourself to your parents, teachers, pastors, or other authority figures. It does not come from any God who demands obedience before He promises blessings (or threatens curses). It does not come from delineated rights. It does not come from The Constitution. It is you from whom freedom springs. It is you in whom freedom thrives. No one gave it to you. Like Dorothy and her ruby slippers, your way home was with you all the time. You just didn't realize it. Do you understand? You are freedom. Contrary to that tiresome cliché, freedom is free. -- B.R. Merrick.

Hope your weekend was grand and your week will be pleasant.

"As nightfall does not come at once, neither does oppression. In both instances, there is a twilight when everything remains seemingly unchanged. And it is in such twilight that we all must be most aware of change in the air -- however slight -- lest we become unwitting victims of the darkness."
--William O Douglas

Jeff,

Thank you for the Montel Williams youtube interview comment.
I watched it and approved it. Honestly I agree with his anger and agony over the fact that 28 soldiers died since January and all the media talks about is Heath Ledger. I don't know if you noticed but I have a blog about Heath and I mentioned that I was saddened.
I am upset over the fact that the media doesn't even mention the troops anymore- I do agree with you. But you also have to understand, that the fact that some of us is sad over the death of Heath - is justifiable as well. You cannot just choose one person over the other. You cannot just choose who deserves to be sadder about...how would that work? The soldiers over Heath..ok...but on the other hand- I wish Tom Cruise or some other jerk died instead of Heath. Is that righ? Can we do that? To choose one dead over the other? I don't think so. What I agree with Williams is that the media choose to NOT cover the troops anymore, and American society and the media feeds on a famous person more than an unknown soldier - AND THAT IS WRONG. But also the death of a celebrity seems more personal- because we feel know these people and you know their life story , you know their parent's name, their sisters name the name of their dog....I still remember the name of unfortunate JFK Jr's dog- since it was on the pages of the magazines- after his crash. Doesn't mean though that these soldier's death is not so important or that it is justifiable to be sad over one person and not the other. No matter what the Media chooses to do- we cannot bring anybody back to life. And that is the bottom line. Coverage or no coverage. They are all dead. Heath Ledger and 1he 28 soldiers.
