Music, Healing & Doubt.
My musical career, fame wise, was playing in a band called Doubt formed at age 17 in high school in Liverpool in Sydney, Australia from 1981 to 1987. I wrote songs, sang and fumbled with guitar & keyboards with 2 good mates, Sam and Tony.

A 3-peice rock unit, we released a vinyl 3 track EP called Perception. A video clip exists. You probably never saw it or us, ever. We were pretty good but it all ended cordially when we discovered life had other things in store. The last gig we ever played was our best: Mosman Hotel, Sydney, supporting Crystal Set (a great little outfit, too, back then starring Russell Kilbey, Steve's brother). So I have gone alone ever since. Sic transit gloria...

Band Influences
Started out with a little Tascam porta-one cassette recorder and ending up with the magnificent GarageBand product by Apple (which, I just discovered, is just like one of my heroes, Andy Partridge).
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have always been influenced by the contemporary pop culture of the time, particularly the British movement called (post-punk) new wave - The Cure, U2, Siouxsie, Echo, Joy Division, Cocteau Twins, & glorious XTC, and the marvellous Kirsty MacColl. Local bands The Church, Spy vs Spy, Meo 245 (!), Models, Go Betweens, and US outfits like Talking Heads, Blondie & the brilliant Suzanne Vega.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Electronic music was fun: Kraftwerk, OMD, Jon Foxx, Eno (the master of Ambient), Budd, Gary Numan...Many others...
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Other Influence
Lifetime influences: Ravel’s Bolero - the only record my Dad owned - started familiarity with classics. Eric Satie is great.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As a teen, Cinema influenced greatly with expensive childhood purchases like John Barry’s Goldfinger, and Rota’s Fellini scores from Ava & Susan’s in George St, Sydney. Then onto The Record Plant (now Redeye?) for some imported Harold Budd, or... Brian Eno, the man who triggered the whole Ambient sound which I would savour endlessly.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I loved old time music like that of the Marx Brothers becoming such a part of the comedy, and the general scene around New York City in the 1920’s to ‘40s. Woody Allen’s scores encouraged not only discovery of Prokofiev, Mendelsohn, and Dixieland jazz, but lots of nostalgic pre & post war stuff like Berlin, Gershwin, Shaw, Ellington, Glenn Miller, ad infinitum...

Healing Influence
Healing? That discovery was through Chiropractic philosophy when it revitalised me in the ‘80s. I became a Doctor of Chiropractic in 1997.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It taught me that humans heal themselves and others via connection to an infinite healing power - No authorities, no outside liberators, no interpreters of truth. Discover it for yourself.
---------------------------------------------------
Music somehow allows my brain to be momentarily quiet; to absolve itself; to shed thought; appreciate silence; heal itself.

How I Make Music
All of my music was produced in my home, without agendas, deadlines or great purpose. I was relaxed, happy and usually not hungry!
Early music was originally produced on tape, a Tascam Porta-1 four track machine, which have all been remastered and enhanced (eg; noise reduced). For a while I used a Mini Disc 8 Track, but all has given way to the magnificent Garage Band software that comes free with all Mac computers. No, its not a plug for Apple, but I admire any company that can assist people to be creative, and bundle so much fine software that is easy to use by a most un-educated musician.

If you sing in the shower, or whistle in the car, you are musical, by my definition. I am self-taught, influenced by my brothers who always had a guitar lying around and my sister who bought the first keyboard I stole from her. My mother always sang as she kneaded tagliatelli dough (odd therapy?).

I have a series of rock/pop tunes which I will share on request, but this site will focus on healing music for now. Please let me know what you think of the Podcasts.
