My influences include Turner's seas, Constable's clouds and the work of abstract expressionist Jon Schueler. Other artists such as Anthony Gormley, Howard Hodgkins, Andy Goldsworthy and Richard Diebenkorn interest me. Fellow artists at my studio building whose work has influenced me and whom I admire, include painters Andrea Turner, Allan Kilpatrick, Stella Auchinleck and jeweller Gilbert McManus ( wonderful simplicity of shape and use of light/shade and texture). My friend Wendy Baillie - an invaluable critic of my work - is also a talented artist whom I respect.
Music
Modern Scottish jazz (my favourite Scottish pianst is Dave Milligan) as well some of the greats like Coltrane, Monk, Count Bassie, Billie Holiday, and Duke Ellington. My classical and pop tastes are quite eclectic - anything from Prokofiev's Cinderella and Arvo Part's Collage uber Bach (I love Bach too - as a child I seemed to constantly wake up and go to sleep to the strain of his melodies as my father played at the piano)to Kate Bush's Aerial and Kaiser Chief's Employment.
Movies
My life as a dog springs to mind which is a long time favourite from my student days- there are too many to list though.
Television
In the past I have enjoyed classical dramas from the BBC, comedy series (Help was wonderful) and wildlife documentaries but I have also enjoyed the occasional soap, especially from the USA (Desperate Housewives,Lost,ER,Six feet under). I'm a big Buffy and Angel fan too - oh and Dr Who. Recently though I have not watched any TV.
Books
One of my recent favourites has been Doris Lessing, On Cats but some of my other favourites include Scottish writers Alexander McCallSmith and Ian Banks. The book which inspired me and made me want to paint again, however, was Isla Dewar's The woman who painted her dreams.
Heroes
My family and friends and any artist who manages to keep going despite all that life can throw at one.

I am an artist and a teacher. You can see some of my work at the Flaubert Gallery at North West Circus Place, Stockbridge, Edinburgh and at the Alpha Art Gallery on Hamilton Place, Stockbridge, Edinburgh. I also have some work in a group show called "All at Sea" at the Bridgeview Gallery in Aberdeen until 10 May 2009. To view some more of my paintings visit my flickr account.
My 'pics' contain photographs taken during a week's visit to Skipness on the west coast of Scotland with great views of the island Arran. My most recent work is inspired by previous trips to Skipness and a summer trip to Orkney and Shetland.
In an exhibition entitled 'Art at the Airport' you can frequently catch some of my work at Edinburgh Airport. Some prints are also available online if you visit the Art at the Airport website.
If you are interested in buying my work, commissioning work or exhibiting work, please contact jillashforth@mac.com.
