Hey everybody, I have created a music page for my band Jill in the Box. We did break up, awhile ago in (2004), right after we recorded our CD (we recorded in October and broke up in November or December of the same year). I feel it is necessary to share the music because each song has a meaning and should be thought about.
Mascara Masacre is about animal testing and Susan Mitchel wrote the song in a lighthearted manner where there is a kind of sarcasm.
Fizzle is all about friendships and what hppens if people don't put the effort into keeping it going as the odds against a friendship flourishing are not good in this fast paced world where survival and work take priority. Susan Mitchel wrote this song as well.
She Left is a song I wrote about what I see horrible in the world and how people turn away, It also captures all 6 senses.
Things Your Parents Used To Yell Is a Lighthearted song about mixed messages parents give their children... and there are a lot of phrases that parents yell at their children that everybody can relate to, everybody has heard their parents utter these words. I struck gold when I had people call in on my radio show (Off Beat) at WBGU 88.1 FM in Bowling Green Ohio to tell me things that their parents used to yell at them. Susan Mitchel wrote that song, another lighthearted funny song. My favorite though, is how Teresa (keys) had one hand playing "London Bridge Is Falling Down" throughout most of the song... while her other hand did different melodies.
Medicated was written by me and is simply a funny song about society's dependence on medication. Maristella shines in this song, she is the best guitarist that I ever had the honor of working with. Susan's vocals go very well with Maristella's guitar in this song. Maristella is a Jazz guitarist so all our songs had a hint of jazz, but between Susan and Maristella the song sounded a bit cabaret.
Susan is a very strong and powerful vocalist, she is absolutely amazing... she sings the best version of White Rabbit that I ever heard. Everything she did with our songs is incredible. Teresa is a very good keyboardist... both her and Maristella are exemplary musicians and were both music majors. They were the main music composers and they were incredible. Susan and I write differently and if you listen to the lyrics you could probably tell who wrote what... Susan is a very lighthearted lyricist and she is a mother of two so she did a great job with Things Your Parents Used To Yell. She is an accountant and works hard as hell... so Fizzle was one from the heart, she has very little time for her friends. Mascara Massacre was just her way of dealing with the serious issue of animal testing, I am a vegetarian and believe in animal rights and that was her response to my activism. We were working on this really awesome song that Susan wrote but we never got to record it or play it out. It was called You Don't Want Me Now That Your Skinny... it was a song about how she lost a lot of weight (and she did) and her husband was afraid she was going to leave him for someone better. Great song!!!! I write songs that are more serious that have a biting sarcasm, Medicated is a very funny song that everybody can relate to, but sarcasm aside... it is a serious song about a serious issue. She Left is the most serious thing I ever wrote, to the point I can't listen to it w/o getting a sinking feeling in my heart and feeling terrified.
i love this band! it's got the same indie feel as tegan and sara, but with a more sardonic wit. listen especially for the drums in "she left" and the piano intro on "mascara massacre." thanks to styx for letting me in on one of bowling green's best kept secrets! ~ricki
