Jim's Interests
|
| General | Music, biking, hiking, Linux and Open Source Software, making the world a better place. I've done a little "geocaching" lately; it's good fun! Oh, I also make soap, and my friends tell me it's really good! (I like it, too.) | | Music | Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Neil Young, Green Day, Doc Watson, old country, classic rock, folk, bluegrass, Big Band Swing (Glen Miller and such) classical, whatever. I've been listening to some Death Cab for Cutie lately; they're great! | | Movies | Rarely watch them, but if you want to watch one, let's go! I recently watched "War of the Worlds." | | Television | A vast wasteland. Kill your TV. | | Books | Books I have read recently include: "The power problem : how American military dominance makes us less safe, less prosperous, and less free" by Christopher A. Preble; "In pursuit of elegance : why the best ideas have something missing" by Matthew E. May; "God knows there's need: Christian responses to poverty" by Susan R. Holman; "The Link: Uncovering Our Earliest Ancestor" by Colin Tudge; "They are us : Lutherans and immigration" by Stephen Bouman and Ralston Deffenbaugh; "Hungry Monkey: A Food-Loving Father's Quest to Raise an Adventurous Eater" by Matthew Amster-Burton; "Sustainable energy without the hot air" by David JC MacKay; "Ignore everybody and 39 other keys to creativity" by Hugh MacLeod; "The hole in our Gospel" by Richard Stearns; "100 ways to motivate yourself" by Steve Chandler; "I'm sorry you feel that way : the astonishing but true story of a daughter, sister, slut, wife, mother, and friend to man and dog" by Diana Joseph; "Jesus, Interrupted: Revealing the Hidden Contradictions in the Bible (And Why We Don't Know About Them)" by Bart Ehrman; "Fifty great essays" edited by Robert DiYanni; "Pedaling revolution : how cyclists are changing American cities" by Jeff Mapes; "Why we're liberals : a political handbook for post-Bush America" by Eric Alterman; "The empathy gap : building bridges to the good life and the good society" by J.D. Trout; "Packing inferno : the unmaking of a Marine" by Tyler E. Boudreau; "The Blue Parakeet: Rethinking How You Read the Bible" by Scot McKnight. I often forget to enter the books I've read here, but this gives you an idea of what I read anyway. | | Heroes | Jesus, Mohandas Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Jr., Albert Einstein, anybody who works for peace and justice. John Lennon and George Martin. Linus Torvalds and Richard Stallman, anybody who writes Open Source software. My newest hero is Rachel Corrie. |

About me:
I believe we all have a responsibility to make the world a better place, and I try to take that responsibility seriously. I spend a lot of time informing people about social injustices, poverty and hunger, economic exploitation of undeveloped nations by developed nations, global warming, and other important issues. I believe a world in which everyone has enough to eat, adequate health care and education are available to everyone, and war is a last resort, is possible - but you and I have to work to make it happen. I write about this stuff sometimes - click here to visit my blog.
When I'm not saving the world, I'm riding my bike, doing live sound or recording engineering, doing electronic hardware design or writing software, maybe taking a hike or pretending like I'm a photographer, or reading, or reading, or READING! Hey, I also write songs - wanna hear some of my stuff? Here ya go:

P.S. - If you're going to send me a Friend Request, please also send me a message so I know who you are. Else if I don't know you, I'm likely to deny your request.

Who I'd like to meet:
I'd like to make some new friends to hang out with, go biking and hiking with, maybe play some music with. I'd like to meet other social activists. And I'd like to meet nice women for friendship/dating/relationship.
