Bio
..Jim Dead (aka James Misbrener).. has had a love affair with music since he popped into the world 30-odd years ago, and has been playing music since he was a wee tacker. His first musical instrument was the piano accordian, followed by guitar (which he stole from his older brother) then piano, harmonium, bass and melodica. In later years he has progressed to Casio keyboard (found in a Sydney back alley), samplers and reel-to-reel players... Over the last decade Jim has split his time between ..London.. and ..Sydney.., and now is based in the ..Blue Mountains.. just outside of Sydney. Prior bands include ..Aunt Jennifer's Tigers.. and ..Birdhead.. and he has also worked with artist ..Chris McGirr.., playing at several of his exhibition openings. Jim also collaborates regularly with talented Sydney musicians ..Myles Heskett.. and ..Chris Ross.. (both ex-Wolfmother), who have worked with Jim for a number of years on recordings, side projects and soundtracks. ..Jim Dead.. also composed and produced original music for ..Neil Mansfield..'s award-winning independent feature, ....Streetsweeper.... (2007) and was a musical producer on Neil's his first film, ....Fresh Air .... (1997)... Jim is also a talented artist, photographer and graphic designer. His first album ..'13 Songs By Jim Dead'.. was released in 1998, and received favorable reviews by Sydney Morning Herald writer ..Bernard Zuel.. and UK comedian ..Sean Hughes.., who described it as "beautiful" after playing it on his morning program on London's XFM radio station after receiving the CD randomly in the mail..... ..Jim Dead.. has just finished his second album, ..'Jim Dead & The Army of Shadows'.., completed in October 2009. It includes 10 stunning, superbly-crafted songs which are at once atmospheric, addictive and intensely emotional. The album was officially launched on December 3, 2009 at the beautiful ..St. Petersburg, Sydney.. venue in St. Peters, in Sydney's inner-west. ..Jim Dead & The Army of Shadows.. delivered a very special live set, along with projections by artist Chris McGirr and filmmakerNeil Mansfield... ....LISTEN TO ORIGINAL MUSIC SCORE BY JIM DEAD (JAMES MISBRENER) FOR TRAILER TO AUSTRALIAN FEATURE FILM ..STREETSWEEPER.., IN CLIP BELOW....... .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. ..Publicity enquiries & artist interviews: jimdeadcd@hotmail.com.. .. Jim Dead & The Army Of Shadows
(Independent )
The idea that two completely separate and opposing worlds may collide, or exist as one, remains an intriguing notion. It offers a potential that has been a topic of great discussion, from Erwin Schrödinger trapping a cat in a box in the 1930s, through the Silver Age of Superman comics to commentary and parody in Buffy and Saturday Night Live. Whether a conscious decision or the product of pure circumstance, the self-titled sophomore release from Jim Dead & The Army Of Shadows also negotiates this phenomenon.
Jim Dead (aka James Misbrener) has been forming a name for himself amongst the Australian and UK music (and film) circles for over a decade now. Following a well-received debut in 13 Songs By Jim Dead (1998), Jim Dead & The Army Of Shadows is the culmination of a process eight years in the making.
The album’s title alludes to Jean-Pierre Melville’s 1969 film adaptation of the book Army Of Shadows – a lonely, dangerous and austere representation of life and rebellion in Nazi occupied France. It’s here, somehow, that Misbrener’s childhood and growth around inner city Sydney intersects with Melville’s bleak representation of Europe, circa WWII.
Via an effective merger of acoustic and electronic recordings, we hear a very specific range of sounds. Produced by Misbrener and band, the accordion, harmonium, horn, strings and Wurlitzer arrangements conjure a sentiment that suggests a link somewhere between belief and determination under a repressive 20th Century regime, with purpose and survival in metropolitan Australia, looking towards 2010.
Whether meeting elements of Sarah Blasko with Philip Glass (‘Jerusalem’) or quoting the dark, ethical collapses of Dylan Thomas (‘Pig Eyes’), the album is a heavy 45-minute listen, generously swollen with a stimulating poise.
