Born and raised in Los Angeles, Jim Horn's professional career was kicked off in the thriving L.A. session scene. Over the next several years, Horn found himself in the studio with such stellar names as Joe Cocker, The Mamas And Papas, Leon Russell, Delaney & Bonnie and Rita Coolidge. His versatility and verve, combined with a unique style on a number of instruments, subsequently earned him a sterling string of credits, including Ringo Starr, Lionel Ritchie, The Beach Boys, Jackson Browne, John Lennon, Linda Ronstadt, Barbra Streisand, and Joni Mitchell.
As Jim's fame grew, he found himself performing on stage as often as in the studio. He was part of the infamous Mad Dogs & Englishman Band, backing Joe Cocker, and thus the sax man first came to international attention. It was the exposure that led George Harrison to recruit Horn for both his 1972 Concert For Bangladesh and subsequent Dark Horse tour.
Fans of jazz instrumental musc and popular music, whatever the variety, are familiar with Jim Horn's playing, although they may not realize it. Not only has Jim had ten solo albums, but this virtuoso artist has also worked on some of the biggest hits in music history. It's Jim's flute solo, for example on Canned Heat's "Goin' Up The Country". The distinctive horn parts on the Grammy winning Fifth Dimension hits "Up, Up and Away" and "The Age of Aquarius" are likewise Horn's handiwork. Others include Frank Sinatra's "Strangers In The Night", Elton John's "Little Jeannie", Toto's "Rosanna", Leon Russell's "Lady Blue", Smokey Robinson's "Tears Of A Clown", Neil Sedaka's "Laughter In The Rain", and Ronnie Milsap's "Lost In The Fifties Tonight", and the beautiful intro oboe solo on Karen Carpenter's smash hit "For All We Know". Horn has also recorded with The Rolling Stones, Steely Dan, Roy Orbison, Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder, Tina Turner and all four Beatles on their solo records. All his credits are too numerous to list.
Jim's two solo records on Warner Bros., "Neon Lights" and "Work It Out" have done quite well. "Neon Nights" was NUMBER ONE for six weeks on R&R's JAZZ CHARTS! "Work It Out" features an array of some of the world's greatest and most famous musicians making their contribution to his music, as he has made to theirs over the years. Some of the guest players include David Letterman's CBS orchestra featuring Paul Shaffer, George Harrison, Toto, Traveling Wilbury Jeff Lynne, Steve Cropper of the Blue's Brothers Band and Tom Petty.
In September of 1997, Jim was part of the massive Garth Brooks in Central Park HBO special, seen by millions around the world, during which he was featured soloing with Billy Joel on "New York State Of Mind".
He was also a part of the Concert For George Harrison in London at the Albert Hall on November 29th, 2002. Jim was the horn arranger for the 2004 Democratic Convention as well as the Rainforest Concerts with Sting at Carnegie Hall in New York.
He is still an "in demand" session artist in Los Angeles, London, Memphis, Muscle Shoals, Nashville and New York. Music professionals refer to him as a musicians musician who is well-liked, and has a dynamic stage appearance. To date, we believe Jim Horn is the most recorded sax player in history.
