Jimi is one of Senegal's most popular musicians and has been a member of Youssou N'dour's Super Etoile de Dakar since 1979. Jimi has a unique guitar style which ranges from the sound of traditional instruments like the Kora to blazing rock guitar solos. He succeeded to transpose the traditionnal musical instruments like Khalam and Kora onto his guitar, creating a very particular style of his own.No one plays guitar like Jimi Mbaye. His style is unique. His voice breems with fever along his wonderful playing.Listen the albums("Dakar Heart" and the latest "Yaye Digalma" sold in I Tunes and CD-Baby.In 1998 he got the Indie Award for his album "Dakar Heart" after been nominated for the Grammy Awards. He's definately one of the best guitar players in the world today. That's why Youssou N'dour keep his all the way down during his legendary career. He co-wrote songs like Baykatt,Mame Bamba,Birima and so one.He played with many loc al musicians in Senegal and in Africa. He specially helped a lot of senegalese musicians compose and record their album in his legendary "Studio Dogo" located in his home in Dakar,Nord Foire. The way he works his guitar is unique and has a style of his own.No one plays guitar like him.Jimi is a tremendous composer and songwriter.
Instead of taking a kora and a khalam with him when touring or gigging,Jimi transposed he playing of these traditionnal instruments on his electric guitar ,giving a new sound very exciting and very intelligent. It's nice to hear Jimi Mbaye playing guitar, used to say guitar legend Carlos Santana who saw him playing in "House of Blues"(Los Angeles) and in San Francisco.
This year,Jimi has played a song on the fabulous jazz album of senegalese bassplayer Cheikh N'Doye,"A Child's Tale" along with Dave Weckl,Eric Marienthal, and so one.Tis album is very well directed musically and it's really a masterpiece.
Jimi's playing is unique and as Youssou N'Dour used to say:No one plays guitar like Jimi Mbaye. To believe it listen to this fabulous guitar riffs introducing the song "Birima" at the Union Chappell in London. It's tremendous and very exciting.Jimi is really a giant among the guitar masters.
Merci pour l'ajout! Hope you will enjoy listening. Blessings, JAMDONG COMMUNITY Official. Au plaisir de nous croiser souvent entre nos pages, et peut-être au détour d'un concert... Que pensent vos p'tites oreilles de nos modestes offrandes musicales?
Hi Jimmy, how are you? Maybe you won't remember me, but we have played and drunk ataia (tea). together at Youssour NDour's house in Gran Dakar. Around 1981-82 when you (L'etiole de Dakar) and our band (Orchestre Ginnick de Dakar), made up of four Sierra Leoneans used to play at a club in Gran Dakar called 'Soumboujourme' or something. I am the guitarist who could play with his teeth. You would play and then we would play after you. I used to love the way you play then, and I still do. I'm your fan forever. Peace and love brother. Masondo
