Jim Mageean
"Known as "Shanty Jim" for many years, his knowledge of sea songs, infectious enthusiasm, and powerful singing made him the obvious choice to set up a Tyneside shanty group. The first influence on him was Louis Killen, resident at the Bridge in Newcastle in 1963, where Jim started singing. A little later he met "The Master", Stan Hugill, a man who is almost single-handedly responsible for the high profile of shanties in the folk revival. In 1975, he moved to London where he was resident at several excellent clubs, notably Dingle's, the Herga, and The Cellar in C Sharp House. He also teamed up with Johnny Collins to create a formidable singing duo which is still on the road after 33 years. Many American and European tours culminated in them winning the prestigious International Liederfestival in Rostock,Germany in 1983 against competition from 19 countries. Since returning to his native Tyneside in 1985, he has continued with his solo career, singing mostly in sea songs and shanties, with a particular interest in those from the West Indies. Solo albums include: The Capstan Bar, Dingles DIN303 Of Ships and Men, Greenwich Village GVR203 With Johnny:Make the Rafters Roar, Sweet Folk All SFA103 Live at Herga, Sweet Folk All SFA123 Strontrace, Greenwich Village GVR226 Coming Of Age, Columns Disc 290262 "

Hi... I just read your letter about Johnny... Thank you so much for it, it was important to me to know how it happened, and I think that the other Pirates will agree with me. With our love, Joanne
This years festival is headlined by Billy Bragg (Friday), Seth Lakeman (Sunday) and Peatbog Faeries (Saturday) with many more top artists also performing incl the award winning The Demon Barbers.
(in memory of Hughie Gallacher, Newcastle United’s record goalscorer in 1926-7, who committed suicide in 1957)
Thirty six goals, more than one way to skin a halfback. Thirty six snapshots of a legend framed in Tyneside pubs. That’s how we remember you Hughie, for the good things in life. Thirty six steps to fame and a sprinking of treasured ashes in a football boot.
You put us on the map for a season. A thirty six gun salute is the least we can do for a man with poetry in his feet, a bottle of Brown in his pocket, and a championship medal round his neck.
You kicked us into ecstasy, into the Blue Star yonder. You were a magic dribbler and stocky with it.
So, keep your feet still Hughie hinny. They’ll never drive those bonny dreams away.
Hi jim! Nice to have you aboard!!! It's a pleasure to be your myspace friend....but I thought we'd been friends for a very long time.....over 30 years by my calculation!!! Keep up the grand singing....even with the Dorset accent!!!
