My roots are in hip hop, Tribe Called Quest, old school LL Cool J, Pharcyde, Jungle Brothers, Digable Planets, De la Soul, the Beastie Boys, Public Enemy, and early producers/djs such as Afrika Bambaataa and Grandmaster Flash. These are just a few of my favs. I loved hip hop and the sound was so fresh at the time all of these artist were innovators and legends in my book.
As hip hop grew into the mega commercial media power that it is today, I began to see people that originally disliked hip hop culture and lifestyle absolutely love it and move towards it. It changed people, for bad and good. But my thing is that some of these people don't even know why they enjoy that song or that one Big Rapper who just signed with Puff Daddys Label. Is it the rhythm, is it the uplifting lyrical style, verbal technique, quality of the production, the positive message?
While some do know why they listen to hip hop some are because it�s being fed to them...
I do still collect hip hop but I don't limit myself to generals such as Funk, Jazz, Afro Beat, Rock Steady, Dub, Indy Punk, Progressive Rock, and Old School.
I love music. And usually if it makes ya want to move I can enjoy it. As far as modern hip hop goes, I usually listen to the innovators, the artist, producers, and djs that are pushing the box and keeping the funky beats in the mix... neptunes, legends, nightmares on wax, ZTRIP, Mixmaster Mike, DJ Spooky, Crown City...
As a artist myself I enjoy producing events to please beat junkies of all sorts and sizes. I have been deejaying for six years and have used house music as my format to incorporate everything that I love in music (funk, soul, lyrical and vocal technique or style, rhythm, basslines, drum breaks)
