“Jimmy Parrish and The Ocean Waves Band” won Jacksonville country radio station WQIK’s “The Next Big Star Contest” on Friday night. The Jacksonville, FL based band will now go on to open for country superstar Kenny Chesney at Jacksonville Memorial Arena August 30th.
The six member band entertained the audience with three original songs from their newly released “Let’s Go Fishin’” CD to beat out the remaining three finalists in Friday night’s event at Maverick’s Rock N’ Honky Tonk at The Jacksonville Landing.
The contest, sponsored by WQIK, is part of a national promotion of Chesney’s “Poets and Pirates” tour. Working with a local radio station in each tour market there are on-air, online and on site promos soliciting video and audio submissions that include at least one original song. A panel of music professionals select a final four who each have 15 minutes to showcase their acts in a local club. The live competition is judged by a radio personality, a venue staff member, a guest judge and audience response. Thirty four winners will be selected from 34 tour markets and Kenny Chesney will select the final winner who will score the grand prize of touring with Kenny in his last three fall concerts. The final prize also includes a cash prize of $25,000 and an audition with Sony BMG records. Let's wish 'em luck!
