The legend goes that the Devil went down to Georgia. However, singer/songwriter Jim Perkins was nowhere to be found as he was busy learning guitar the real way: practice.
As a youngster, Perkins loved to sing in church and was soon singing wherever there was music to be heard. He bought his first guitar, a Takamine Jasmine, in 2001. He began writing songs and was soon bit by the performance bug.
He released his debut album, Maker of Dreams, in 2002 before travelling the U.S. and Canada as a member of the North American Mission Board’s World Changers group. Upon return home, he dreamed of quitting his day job and living the musician’s life. Soon after, he was back on stage at various open mic nights and talent competitions sponsored by various record labels.
The turning point came during a GMA event in Nashville, TN. His song, “Maker of Dreams,” was showcased in a room full of record executives. The Senior Vice President of A&R at Sparrow Records loved his work. Newfound confidence in tow, Perkins set forth on his mission to share his acoustic folk music with the world, playing over 200 shows in 2006 alone!
Perkins’s singing and songwriting is some of the best in acoustic music today. He easily and gracefully moves from Folk to Jazz to Blues without missing a beat. His lyrics are heartfelt, authentic tales of everyday life that can’t be expressed in any other way. Many have compared his work to popular artists such as Marc Broussard, Emerson Hart, David Gray and Stephen Curtis Chapman.
His songs are “about living life through different phases of growth that I think everybody goes through at one point or another. Sometimes music is the only way to express real emotions.”
Jim Perkins currently resides in Augusta, GA.
