Vocal influences include Louis Armstrong, Billie Holliday, Leon Redbone and Tom Waits. Grew up listening to all the old jazz guitarists like Charlie Christian, Kenny Burrell, Wes Montgomery, Barney Kessel, Joe Pass, etc. Also the blues guys like T-Bone Walker, Albert King and Roy Buchanan (to name a few).
I began playing guitar in the early 60’s, influenced by guitarists such as Charlie Christian, Kenny Burrell, Barney Kessel and T-Bone Walker. Originally a trumpet major I played guitar in the college stage band and later went on to the guitar chair for the 298th Army Band while stationed in Berlin, Germany in the late 60’s. After my return to the states I began working the Texas club circuit. I then relocated to the Washington, DC area in 1984 and have been playing ever since. I am currently free lancing and playing a single act performing old jazz, blues and roots. ***Note*** I am now offering guitar and bass lessons. If you or someone you know is interested in learning guitar or bass please email me at jimraygilliam@gmail.com
Hope you had a great Thanksgiving. Trying to arrange a trip to NC in Jan. Will let you know how that works. Hi to Nancy. Hope all is well. Cheers! Sonny
Dang, Jim..looks like you got PPW all wrapped up...LOL. I'm trying to book a date there in late Sept. Band is coming along...very big sound. Hope to do a demo by early August. Going through some golf withdrawal.. Cheers!
HAVE A GREAT MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND JIM! STAY KEWL BROTHER! ... RICK http://c1.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images02/100/l_7231e35ec4ef426a8d34f3f6c37acc28.jpg>
Jim....the pleasure was all mine. You and Vince were very gracious to invite me up, and your musicianship was superb. I had a great time & I'm looking forward to doing it again. Cheers....Sonny
Hey Jim..hope the gig went well today. Built some new Snake Eyes Irons/Hybrids. Can't wait to hit'em. Hope the heads don't go flying down the fairway. Let's play.
Your guitar playing and singing show that you are a true jazz man. Maybe one day I will grow up and move on from my trashy rock exploits to jazz and see if can play the way you do.
Jim, I had Paul and Sonny backing me on this. Thanx for the comps but I can't take all the credit. Paul is a masterful bass player in his own right and Sonny was there with his solid backing! We kind of just threw it together....a little rough around the edges but what the hay! Hey! We need to reband "The Sluts" again and do some dates! Bob
Thanks for the comment, my friend. Sure was great to see you at Borders! Coffee, music, books - my kinda place! Have a very Happy and Jazzy New Year - love, Ruthi
Hey Ji, How are you? Haven't seen you for a long time. We are playing at Bangkok BLues on October 30th @ 7pm (this Thursday!) Hint, Hint!!! Love n' hugs from Ruthi
