It also has a variety of meanings in heavy metal and is known by a variety of terms: devil sign, devil horns, goat horns, metal horns, metal sign, throwing the goat, evil fingers, Pommesgabel (Pommes = fries, Gabel = fork), mano cornuto, peka evil, the horns, also "Rock Fist" or Rock on in some U.S. rock music subcultures.
Gene Simmons claimed to have first introduced the sign to heavy metal, when he was shown extending his little finger on the cover of KISS' 1977 album Love Gun, although his claim is disputed: "A casual glance at this [1] cover would suggest he is correct. However, there are two points of contention that refute this. First of all, he is holding it hand to his side, jutting from his hip ... Secondly, and most importantly, he isn't really making the sign! We have enlarged the section of the artwork ... to show that his thumb isn't covering his middle two fingers but resting at the side of his index finger." On the other hand Gene Simmons has, even before the Love Gun LP, showed this sign on stage or during photo sessions (for example Japan, April 1977). Gene was inspired by 60's Marvel comics, especially Dr Strange and also Spider-Man. However some believe that the British Heavy metal band Iron Maiden first associated the sign to heavy metal. The grandmother of one of the members of the band had shown it to him when he was little and it was soon adopted as the "Metal Sign".
In heavy metal music, Ronnie James Dio also used this sign. His Italian grandmother used it to ward off the evil eye (malocchio). Dio began using the sign soon after joining (1979) the metal band Black Sabbath. The previous singer in the band, Ozzy Osbourne, was rather well known at using the "peace" sign at concerts, raising the index and middle finger in the form of a V. Dio, in an attempt to connect with the fans in a similar manner to Ozzy, wanted to use a similar hand gesture. However, not wanting to copy Osbourne, he chose to use the sign his grandmother always made. Both accounts are predated by the Chicago based psychedelic-Goth band Coven, led by singer Jinx Dawson, who's band made the gesture on their 1969 album cover for "Witchcraft Destroys Minds and Reaps Souls", incidentally, the band also wrote a song called "Black Sabbath" and one of the band members was named Oz Osborne, not to be confused with Ozzy Osbourne of Black Sabbath fame. This is a much truer origin of the hand sign and of the seeds of Heavy Metal.
NOTE:The "Sign of the Horns" Is On Every Coven Album Cover, starting in 1969.
(II.) Jinx Refused To Embellish Coven's Authentic Makeup & Clothing For A Record Deal
(III.)Jinx & Coven Always Signed Their Recording Contracts in Their Own Blood, Starting With Their 1st in 1968
Jinx Dawson (vocals), Oz Osborne (bass), Steve Ross (drums)
COVEN, a Chicago Psychedelic Rock band certainly ahead of their time, delivered strongly occult themed proto-Metal on their 1969 released album 'Witchcraft Destroys Minds & Reaps Souls', produced by Bill Traut. Due to the presence of the opening song 'Black Sabbath' and the presence of former MAGIC LANTERNS bassist Mike 'Oz' Osborne some journalists confused the act with BLACK SABBATH.
The group, fronted by female vocalist Jinx Dawson, gigging in the Illinois area, attracted the attention of major label Mercury Records, who duly signed the band, naturally in a ceremony that involved the musicians own blood.(Above is the only correct Coven info listed at "Rockdetector")
(IV.)Jinx Was Told Her 1st & 2nd Coven Album Masters Were Destroyed in a Chicago Fire & an L.A. Fire.
Whether there was an occult cause of spontaneous combustion to this mystery or a lie fueled by producer's greed, the fact is that Jinx cannot obtain these 2 masters, as she is now the Master Rights Owner of all her works. She does hold master mixes, but would like to unravel this mystery.
(V.)Gold Record Fact
Jinx was awarded an RIAA Certified Gold Record on Dick Clark's "Touch Of Gold" TV Special for "One Tin Soldier" in 1972, only to have it ripped from her hands by her management people while leaving the stage, never to see it again. Her greatly beloved mother wished to have this award from her all her life. She was not been successful in getting it to her.Her Mother recently crossed over.RIP Betty Jane Adams Dawson...
(VI.)"One Tin Soldier" Lyric Fact
Being an issue of the Left Templar Bloodline, Jinx felt recording this movie title song was most appropriate as a tribute to her Templar ancestors. This recording became THE "Vietnam Protest Anthem" & is being used in videos today to protest the Current Wars. (Reference:The song was written during the anti-war movement of the late 60's. Also going on at that time was the Six Day War of 1967 in Israel. The "Kingdom on a mountain" is none other than The Temple Mount in Jerusalem. It sits on Mt. Moriah. The people of the valley are the Muslim or Palestinian people who live in the Kidron Valley adjacent to Mt. Moriah. The Stone with the
treasure underneath it is the stone that the Muslims claim Mohammed ascended and the Jews claim was the base in The Holy of Holies. The treasure underneath "the stone" which is up to 120ft.under the Temple mount is where the supposed hidden treasure of the Jewish treasury was. The
Templars of the early 1000 a.d. where said to have found this treasure. The song closely discusses details of "The Crusades". The people of the Valley who did not want to share was none other than the leader of the Muslims, Saladin the Turkish leader who had restricted visitation of other religions to Jerusalem which in turn intitiated the crusades. Saladin(the Muslims) did regain the Temple Mount. The One Tin Soldier riding away just says that masses die in war on both sides and only one or a few are left. It sarcastically says "leaders greedily go ahead and do evil in the name of Heaven.")

Influences
When Coven recorded their 1st album in 1968-69, they didn't have many influences
to draw from as there were no musical groups of their type at that time...
Opera, Horror & Vampire films, the Church Choir, Horror Comics & Gothic Tales
were the main influences the notorious Jinx had to draw from when she started the group, as she was still a young
teen at the time. But she says her mother was actually her strongest influence
as there was a huge record collection in the family home & her mother played
musicals starring Judy Garland & Barbra Streisand and she used to make Jinx
mimic them. But she would make her spend minimul time with the musicals, as
the opera practice was paramount. Jinx would also sneak into to the hidden "evil
old blues records" & sing to those when the family was away. Her mother was
also her first road manager & had an excellent voice herself...With her 6 octave
opera trained voice, in which she could vibrate her vocal chords into a harmony
while singing one note, Jinx burst on the recording scene in 1969 with a controversial
themed concept album which she called the 1st Rock Opera, the now infamous"Witchcraft"...She
speaks of that album now as being devilishly irreverent & a first in music recordings...The
early onstage photographs show her with her then trademark whiteface makeup,
pale lips & kohl eyes...She says portraying her heartfelt Magick image...
The second Coven album, which included her & her bandmates' Chicago street
tough style, also brought Jinx her 1st major hit, "One Tin Soldier" theme to
the movie "Billy Jack", which was 1st recorded on the Warner Brother Movie Soundtrack
album...Jinx says her main influence for her dynamic & emotionally charged vocal
on the the huge worldwide hit Movie Title Song,"One Tin Soldier" was watching
the "Billy Jack" movie footage on the studio screen behind the orchestra from
the vocal booth as she recorded. It really upset her knowing those wild & majestic,
running free horses were literally being pushed over the cliffs & being killed
for use in dog food, as there were no CGI effects then & this was actually filmed. She
could barely get through the song & you can hear her voice breaking up at the
end of the recording. The fourth album she recorded was her Coven's "Blood On
The Snow", part a return to her classic gothic opera roots & classic rock Coven
California style...As she admits, the decadant Hollywood lifestyle & warmer night air
suited her tastes & showed in the music.
