Jitsvinger’s Bio:
As one of South Africa's fastest rising Afrikaans vernacular hip hop artists and poets, Jitsvinger (Quintin Goliath) started his ascent in the music industry while still at school. In the mid-90s he was inspired by acts and hip hop crews including POC (Profits of da City), who visited local schools promoting awareness around HIV/Aids, education, and drug abuse.
In 2000 Jitsvinger, who also plays acoustic and electric guitar, turned what he loved into his career. But this was not without its struggles as he needed to first find the right people to steer him in the right direction.
Since diving into the arts arena, Jitsvinger has successfully launched his debut self-written full-length album, Skeletsleutel (2006).
He is a strong believer in collaborating with other artists, musicians, and poets across the musical spectra and genre, always transcending boundaries, and experimenting and creating new sounds.
His versatility as an artist and musician has seen him travelling the country and world, performing at various outdoor and indoor festivals, theatres, clubs, living rooms, and even cordoned off streets.
Jitsvinger's passion for music transcends even rhythm and chords.
In 2005 Jitsvinger was invited by the Western Cape department of education to facilitate a creative writing programme at the historical Robben Island. The top learners from nine provinces formed part of the programme. That same year he performed with established poet and author Antjie Krog, and poets Kgaofela Magododi and Comrad Fatso (Namibia) during the Spier Poetry Exchange. He returned to the festival in 2006.
It was another festival stop for Jitsvinger in 2007 when he performed in the Voorkamerfest in Darling alongside theatre giant, David Kramer, comedian, Mark Lottering, and the Khoi Khonnexion. 2007 saw Jitsvinger perform at the Migrant Music Festival, in Taiwan. He travelled and collaborated with the official Khoisan praise poet, Jethro Louw (Tanneman !Xam), performing traditional cultural music to an audience of over 2 000 people in the Taiwanese cities of Tainan and Taipei. There he also addressed various workshops about the Khoi culture. Toward the end of the year Jitsvinger collaborated with opera singer Golda Schultz, which was screened on SABC1 for their Head Wrap collaborative arts programme.
2008 was a busy year for the artist. He became the first hip hop artist to perform to a packed Baxter Theatre audience during the Fleur Du Cap Theatre Awards. Being influential on the Afrikaans music scene, Jitsvinger was approached to comment on the history and state of Afrikaans music, and the way forward for the language in music, for a documentary that was screened on the Afrikaans music channel, MK89 (DSTV). Mixing music with acting, Jitsvinger took on multiple roles in the hip hop musical, Hip Hop Connected (directed by musician and artist, Teba). Three performances of the musical were staged at Cape Town's Artscape Opera House.
In mid-2008, he travelled to Switzerland as part of the inter-continental Rogue State of Mind project where, with fellow artists from Switzerland and South Africa, performed in clubs, the Schalchthaus Theatre, and festivals (the Buskers Festival, Funk Em See Festival, and Rock the Docks Festival), entertained and educated crowds around the country. As part of the project the artists recorded new tracks for the second Rogue State of Mind double album due for release in 2009.
Back in Cape Town, Jitsvinger was invited to perform with Burni Aman, Bhlakroze, Pops Mohammed, and Georgia Me (USA), at the Speak the Minds Poetry Festival, held at Artscape Opera House. Celebrating your heritage, Jitsvinger performed at the Badilisha! An African Poetry Exchange event in Long Street, Cape Town, days later.
Shortly after the event he flew to Durban for a week to participate in the Poetry Africa Festival. There he performed and shared the stage with Nastio Mosquito, Carlos Gomez, and !Bushwoman, and facilitated poetry and creative writing workshops, and judged an annual slam poetry competition.
The year was rounded off with an appearance at the annual Obs Festival in Observatory, Cape Town. Jitsvinger, along with his crew the Khoi Khollective, performed to an audience on the acoustic stage.
Throughout 2008 Jitsvinger has been working on his follow-up album due for release in 2009.
