Knuckles's Interests
|
| General | American literature, great comics, B-movies, beautiful women, my lovely partner, old poetry, new poetry, the history of the printed word, printed words about history, film scores, and no-holds-barred argument...
| | Music | I'm eclectic, though I am taking medication for it. Current favorites include Clutch, Decemberists, Martin Grech, Failure, Corvus Corax, and Wilco. I love the film scores of Christopher Young, Danny Elfman, John Ottman, Bear McCreary, James Horner, Hans Zimmer,James Newton Howard, Jeff Beal, Tyler Bates, and Lennie Niehaus. I'm also interested in Remy Zero, Diamond Nights, Scissor Sisters, Radiohead, and Dandy Warhols. All-time favorites include Tom Waits, Bill Withers, ELO, and Leonard Cohen. Finally, I'll listen to just about any smarmy 70s tune you play, and I'll do it without a trace of embarrassment.
| | Movies | I like plots and characters big enough to fill the big screen. I like old black-and-white films with Bogart and Cagney and Bergman and Lake. I like B-movies with aliens and zombies and gunfire and curvy women in tiny clothes. I like film noir and kung-fu action movies and exploitation flix. All-time favorites include Chinatown, To Have and Have Not, The Exorcist, White Heat, Evil Dead, Night of the Living Dead, The African Queen, Jacob's Ladder, Apocalypse Now, Secretary, Dagon, Get Christy Love, and Enter the Dragon. I like B movies made by people who know they're making B movies, and I like blockbusters made by people who know how to use a budget strategically.
| | Television | I don't watch a lot of TV, except to catch old movies on TCM. What little network TV I do watch is usually appointment TV. When I'm just sitting around, unwinding in front of the set, it's usually with a cop show or reruns of some comedy I didn't catch the first time around (like Scrubs).
I also like clever SF and Fantasy shows such as Dr. Who, Torchwood, Firefly, and that sort of thing.

You are a pilot with a good if not silly sense of humor. You take pride in your collection of toys. You love your significant other.

| | Books | Most of what I read is argument and essay. Give me a shelf full of Richard Rodriguez, George Will, Peter Singer, and Christopher Hitchens, and just leave me the hell alone for a few days. I also read history, but not usually the kind of pop history that makes the bestsellers list; non-scholarly historians don't really appeal to me. When I read fiction, I tend to prefer American authors, but only because I'm more familiar with the American tradition in literature than with the British. My current favorite is Cormac McCarthy, though I love Mark Twain, William Dean Howells, Stephen Crane, Thomas Pynchon, and Don DeLillo. I also like really obscure old novels and sketches. As for so-called "genre" fiction, I am a lifelong reader. The first book I read (without pictures in it) was a collection of Robert E. Howard "Conan" stories, and I'm still a Howard fan. I like Fantasy without elves, stuff like James P. Blaylock and Tim Powers serve up. And I'll admit to really liking a good rip-roaring space opera. Break out the rayguns! | | Heroes | People who voluntarily make a personal sacrifice for someone else or for the greater good. MLK was a hero. Wesley Autrey is a hero. The corporate whistle-blower who puts his livelihood on the line for the sake of the truth, that's a hero. And this guy here...

Feel like being a hero yourself? Check out the good folks at the Hero Initiative. They collect money for comics creators in need, and there are a lot more of those than you might think -- people who dedicated their lives to an American art form only to end up unable to pay hospital bills and other major expenses. The Hero Initiative helps these folks out, but they need your contributions. You can reach the Hero Initiative's MySpace page through their icon on my Friends list, or you can just click on the banner below to visit their WorldWideWeb site. Do it, please. Give them money. Help someone who needs help.

I'm pretty sure I got Iron Man only because Cap wasn't part of the test. Oh well.

About me:

I teach English at a community college. I've been in a hurricane. I love to read books about history, and books about the history of books. If there was a book about the history of books about the history of books, I'd probably have two copies on my shelf. I'm also an unapologetic comic book geek. I learned my first ethical lessons from my parents, but Captain America and Spiderman weren't far behind. I'm a patriot, but I despise jingo. I love my country, and I don't want to see it hijacked by extremists. And I'm really getting tired of typing so many capital I's. Let's talk about you instead. More specifically, let's talk about those shoes you have on. Who told you those were a good idea?
|
Who I'd like to meet:
Writers, artists and thinkers, especially Kurt Busiek, Eric Powell, Ed Brubaker, Brian Michael Bendis, Matt Fraction, Mike Mignola, Alex Ross, Gail Simone, Grant Morrison, Judd Winick, Ariel Olivetti, and many others for their work in comics, keeping a true American art form relevant and powerful. I'd also like to meet Richard Rodriguez and George Will and thank them for reminding me that the essay can be an art form. I'd like to shake the hand of Wesley Autrey, the New York subway superhero. And I'd like to invite Karl Rove and Dick Cheney to a press interview in a room that smells strongly of dog feces, just so I can watch their expressions on hidden camera.
As far as fictional heroes are concerned, there is none other...

So long, Cap. May you return when our country learns once again to deserve you.
