Sounds Like
Deep & propulsive with one eye on the funk & one eye to the heavens...
The J-Lab story began in 2003 when Jon Dickens, the man behind J-Lab began a live techno project based on improvisation. After 2 years of gigs home & abroad, the guys at the After-Dinner net label got him to stay out the clubs long enough to complete the Bout Time EP on www.adrecordings.com.
Informed by a love of dub & funk, the J-Lab sound is constantly evolving, mixing up Detroit, electro & more minimal influences.
2006 saw a further live release on www.adrecordings.com, and the 'Ghostwalkin' track appeared on Metroline's downloadable compilation album 'Metro Buskers Vol 1' (www.metrolinerecordings.com). A live set recorded live at Run in London in January 2006 is available to download at www.runsounds.com. Jon has also contributed bass guitar to some of Katzo's recordings. A winter's break in India 2006-07, saw J-Lab perform a live set in Goa. The 'Radiophique' EP was released in March 2007 on Brazil's up & coming Motronic netlabel. 2008 was quieter, as Jon was involved in the organsation of the Netaudio London festival, but in the autumn a J-Lab track found it's way on to an alt recordings release entitled 'Not Another Netlabel Vol2', available at http://www.deletetechno.com/alt.html. J-Lab also made a number of festival appearances in the summer of 2008, inbetween Jon working on an AV project. Jon has also worked with Alex Fisher under the name SST & is currently also working with Berlin's Dr NoJoke & Servando Barreiro as the improvisational AV project TRIOon This project made it's debut at Club Transmediale 2009 festival in Berlin.
